If “sprinter” is considered a position and you take into consideration the level of competition, it has to be Usain Bolt.

I would argue that the 100 m. dash is the most competitive athletic competition there is because running fast is central to so many games and sports that it’s nearly impossible for someone with a talent for it to go unnoticed. We all remember the fastest kid in the class or neighborhood growing up. A kid with the natural ability to mature into a sub 10.00 sprinter is going to be noticed somewhere.

But how many tall, lean athletes with a similar build to Phelps even think about competitive swimming (or even have convenient access to an Olympic-sized pool and good coaching)? Probably mostly the ones in urban areas who couldn’t hack it in football or basketball where there’s a hell of a lot more exposure and opportunity for a star athlete. And how many people around the world go a lifetime and never touch a hockey stick or put on a pair of ice skates like Gretzky?

If you took all the people in the world within five years of age of every great athlete listed on this thread (in their prime) and pushed all those people into their sport or position with equal resources, I think Bolt would have the best chance to remain on top of his sport.

I mean if you are just running to the ball without regard to scheme or gap responsibilities it’s going to inflate your numbers.

The rest of the team was playing 10 man defense because he was rogue on most downs.

Now if you want to pick a guy to cut loose it’s LT, but it’s a factor in considering who he was as a historical player.

All of this is nonsense. Did you ever actually watch LT play?

Myles Garrett should’ve been arrested for assault. That’s one dumb, reckless bastard.

At his peak, Pedro was the most dominant pitcher ever, especially considering he played during the Steroids Era. What he accomplished in those years was unbelievable.

And I know I’ll get hate for this, but Barry Bonds @ his peak was untouchable.

Not really. Thomas was a great player but he wasn't as good as Rickey Jackson

Rickey Jackson did everything a linebacker is supposed to do, and was a hell of a special teams player.

Sacks get overvalued sometimes imo. All sacks are not equal bc sacks can get piled up sometimes when teams get up big and the other team needs to pass every play.

Prime Rickey Jackson vs Prime Pat Swilling is a good example. Swilling racked up the sacks for a few yrs with the Saints but nobody actually thought he was the Saints best OLB. It was Jackson who still had double digit sacks but stopped the run as well and generally was great at everything a OLB was supposed to do.

HOT TAKE Jackson was in the same class as LT but he just wasn’t as marketable and he played for a small market team.

quote:

A second-round pick out of Pittsburgh, Jackson started every game in his rookie season and was an iron man, starting every game in every season, with the exception of missing two games in 1989 after being involved in a serious automobile accident. Even then, Jackson missed just two games despite undergoing plastic surgery and having his jaw wired shut for serious injuries. He played with a special helmet, an illustration of just how tough he was.

That special helmet just had an extra bar or two on it. That dude could play football.

Secretariat

quote:

That's a no brainer if you want to include animals. Still holds record for Derby, Belmont, Preakness.

I am not saying I disagree, but I don’t think it’s as clear cut as many might think.

The only world record Secretariat holds is 1.5 miles on dirt (from the Belmont) which is a seldom run distance in horse racing. Riva Ridge and Spectacular Bid (both horses from the ‘70s) are the record holders at the Derby and Preakness distances. Spectacular Bid’s mile-and-a-quarter record is nearly two seconds faster than Secretariat’s Derby time.

And as amazing as Secretariat was at the Belmont, Prove Out beat him three months later on the same track, same distance.

American Pharaoh won the Triple Crown plus the Breeders Cup Classic. Secretariat ran against fields of only 13, 6, and 5 in his TC races. AP ran against more crowded fields of 18, 8, and 8. Secretariat won 12/16 starts. AP won 9/11 starts.

I think Secretariat was an amazing horse, but I don’t think he was as far above other great horses as it seems.

I have no idea who Myles Garrett is, but I can tell you that absolutely no one ever described Lawrence Taylor in this juvenile manner.

Dominik Hasek is further away from Marty Brodeur and Patrick Roy than Gretzky is from Mario
