You are right about everything and know how tennis players fell about the Olympics

The first few World Cups of Hockey in the late 90s early 00s had some pretty notable player omissions if I remember right. In general international tournaments are just more of a thing in hockey, and I think the omission from the Olympics had built up a desire for this generation to go all in on it.

International tournaments have just never been that big of a deal in baseball historically

This isn’t the World Cup or soccer. The event started 20 years ago and there’s no history. You can’t manufacture that type of investment in it
Not using the World Cup to prove my point on investment. That’ll come with time.

It’s true

I think sports that are historically more international have always cared more about international competitions :

Hockey
Tennis
Soccer

Baseball is just relatively new to it truly being international on the pro/world stage but that is clearly growing and it’s clearly becoming more popular at the WBC

You’re not wrong, as all exhibitions are unserious. Where you ARE wrong is imagining that the WBC will ever be more than an exhibition. And it shouldn’t.

There are small things they can improve, but it’s been a great event. Each one has been better than the last in my opinion. I’d like to see them not host it all over the globe as well

1. MLB needs to remove its influence (I know they created the thing, but they’re harming the product with restrictions)

What restrictions does MLB have in place?

2. Every country (USA) needs to be 100% invested in competing.

Ok. How do you suppose they accomplish this?

3. It needs to be moved to late fall or mid winter and adopt a longer, more serious tournament format.

Lol. Good luck get players to cancel their offseason plans for this after play 162+ games.

It feels a hell of a lot more serious than it did when it first started, and MLB has done well to hold it in places like Miami that showcase the crowds from Latin American countries who care instead of putting it somewhere the crowd would be sterile as hell.

Yep, USA/Mexico was about as lit as Daikin Park can be. Houston and Miami were perfect venues.

The OP said he wants countries “100% invested on winning”. You countered him to act as if they are.

100% invested will always be subjective. There will always be a decision or addition that could have been made when you have 100’s of different players to pick from .

For sure. The semi finals/finals were every bit as tense as post season baseball. I mean as a player I’d kill to be involved with this rather than some boring arse, meaningless spring training game.

Then you will have an even harder time getting the biggest stars to agree to play if it takes away their offseason. Not to mention, most of those guys will have been home since late September or early October and now you’re asking them to keep training for a November-December tournament.

Being in the middle of spring training is the best spot for it if you want big name stars to play. Even if you have to make the sacrifice that pitchers will have stricter limitations on usage.

It may grow but it’s never going to be more important to players than the Yankees and Dodgers, Fenway Park and Wrigley Field, nine figure contracts and World Series rings, and staying fresh and healthy.

The WBC will always be a novelty that the best players may or may not participate in - and may not be fully invested in even if they do.

The international players already care a metric shite ton and I think the wave of young American players that come up will also care close to that level if not the same

I’ve followed the WBC since its inception. It started as a novelty, but has done a solid job of growing interest. Houston was a great site this go round. I believe in the past, it has been to Petco, Dodger, Chase Field, and Miami for the US venues. Chase is convenient since it is near Spring Training, but when I’ve gone to WBC games there, attendance has been down except for US-Mexico. Houston had big crowds for all US games.

I think Arlington could be a good spot next cycle. It has to be warm or a domed stadium, and relatively convenient for Mexican fans since Mexico will be in that pod.

It will never be bigger than the WS, but like the 4 Nations Faceoff, it can be a huge boost to the sport.

Negative.

I’m not saying players “won’t care” but not like their real jobs and making history in the MLB.

It will definitely improve as the profile of the tournament rises. The collegiate national team has also become a bigger deal as the profile of college baseball has risen a bit in recent years, which helps ingrain it at a little younger age

The baseball culture in places like the DR, Venezuela and Puerto Rico is just not comparable to anything here. The winter leagues are serious business there and so is the Caribbean Series. I remember the Astros having to basically force Cristian Javier to not play for Licey in the Dominican Winter League after they won the World Series. It is everything to them and for the guys who have made it, their golden ticket out of abject poverty in many cases

The best time for it would be July/August and pause the season for a couple weeks just like hockey does. This would also align with the Olympic schedule so every other year could either be WBC or Olympics.
