Verlander to retire after the season

"This season has challenged me in ways I haven't experienced before, both physically and mentally," Verlander said in a statement. "I've always believed that as long as I could compete at the level I expect of myself, I'd keep playing. I never wanted to retire because of a milestone, a number, or a date on the calendar. I wanted the game to tell me when it was time. "Over the last several months, I've realized that time has come. While I'm fully committed to giving my team everything I have for the rest of this season, I've decided this will be my last. It's fitting that I get to finish where it all started -- with the Detroit Tigers, the organization that drafted me and gave me my first opportunity."

I hope he can stay healthy the rest of the year and have a few good starts in front of the Detroit fans to round it out. One of my all time favorites and a first ballot HOFer

I'm glad he was able to go back to Detroit. Dude was incredible in Houston.

It’s like he’s been in the league long enough that it doesn’t shock us to hear he’s finally retiring, but it’s also crazy/weird to think of MLB without him.

He said he was going to ride it til the wheels fell off, and that is what is happening. Father Time continues to be unbeaten.

The closest mold in the current mlb is gerrit cole. His highest IP is 212 and has 8 complete games TOTAL.
Jv threw 223 at the age of 36 peaked at 250IP and hit 6 CGs in one season.
I know analytics may say differently but having a guy like that who can completely reset your entire pitching staff by taking up most or all of a game is a lost commodity

I know he wanted 300, but 266 might as well be 500 to the guys behind him. Kinda crazy to think about.

Max - 222
Cole - 156 and already 35 years old. (JV won 78 games from this point)
It's not a guarantee we even see another 200 game winner if Cole doesn't get there. Really puts into perspective how much of a workhorse this guy was.

Yep even if max wanted to keep going out of spite to JV to pass him he’s too washed to make it to 250.

I think he will go in without a hat like Maddux. Incredibly close to call between the two and he clearly loves both places dearly

JV is one of the more likeable pro athletes out there. Always enjoy his interviews. Could have a career in coaching or managing if he wants it.

I thought he was washed when he went to Houston. The way he was able to stay elite and have a whole other career was incredible, dude is one of the all-timers for sure
