UConn becomes the 11th basketball program in the Big East. I'm guessing Dayton or St. Louis for the 12th.

1989 Metro Conference...would be a little fun still

Cincinnati
Louisville
Memphis
Tulane
Florida State
South Carolina
Va Tech
Southern Miss

And their super conference that failed but was trying to get:

North Division South Division
Boston College East Carolina
Cincinnati Florida State
Pittsburgh Louisville
Rutgers Memphis State
Syracuse Miami
Temple South Carolina
Virginia Tech Southern Mississippi
West Virginia Tulane

Better football attendance than usm last year

UAB has a much bigger budget as well, and better media market.

those are the two most logical choices, Loyola of Chicago could be a darkhorse

This is a GREAT move for UConn and the Big East alike. That would give the Big East 11 teams, the next logical question is will they add any more teams. I think they should add 2 more and go to 13. That makes an even 12 teams to play. Add Dayton and VCU. Both are quality programs, located in big cities with great fan bases. Plus it would add some great rivalries like Dayton/Xavier.

Villanova
Georgetown
Xavier
Marquette
Butler
Creighton
DePaul
St Johns
Seton Hall
Providence
UConn**
Dayton**
VCU**

That would be a GREAT basketball league!!!

Who else is? And they absolutley could be on that level. Both have Final 4 banners hanging. What other schools out there can say that?

Dayton would be a perfect fit in the Big East. It's a diehard basketball school and town. Plus it's also a Catholic university which fits most of the league profile (UConn has a deep BE history that makes them a fit, of course).

Dayton is THE most logical choice. Great arena (NCAA First 4 host), great fan base and a quality program. They would be a great fit with instant rivals with Xavier!!

I think the writing is on the wall for them and UMass to drop to I-AA but we will see how long they hold out. Love this for Big East hoops though. Lots of good options in the A-10 like Dayton to pick up as a 12th. UMass would be the obvious choice if they hadn’t been such shite lately but could still see it happening

The league of my early childhood. Bimbo Coles could fill it up

UConn’s athletic department lost 41 million in 2018. Yikes!! Football lost 18 million, men’s and women basketball both lost millions as well. Yea they need to do something in Storrs.

Loyola Chicago would make sense - big school, lots of alumni although not great fan support - although that could change with better teams in their conference.

I am guessing DePaul would block that though.

this should also hurt UCONNs baseball program.

that's the point. Basketball conferences really have no intrinsic reason to add members unless they'll make lots more money

Once you no longer needed 12 for a football title game, that reason was gone too, hence the Big XII going through teams and deciding not to expand

And about UAB, shutting down football was a permanent black mark on your program, and it's not like the reasons to or the political will for it went away. AAC should be wary of that.
