Their aggressive pushing of women's sports obviously hurts ratings, it makes people less likely to watch, not more.

This ^^^^^

I would say it this way, I probably would not watch the WNBA under any circumstance, but I might stop on it for a couple of minutes while channel surfing if there weren't this blatant pandering.

ESPN can show the WNBA and keep making it 2nd or 3rd story on Sportscenter but it don’t matter…. Borderline unwatchable and ratings reflects that. Ratings drives advertising dollars. TV money drives salaries.

If the NBA and ESPN wasn’t continuously propping it up most teams would have been bankrupt a decade ago.

or a silly DIE initiative

Dude they are FORCED to pay an overpay for the WNBA by the NBA and give the league primo slots on air. That's not DIE.

A segment on sportscenter costs them almost nothing, certainly nothing extra.

How does the WNBA even make money?

ESPN if forced to overpay for the WNBA in order to get NBA games. It's that simple

My favorite thing about the WNBA is when the talking heads on ESPN sit around and pretend to give a single frick about it, or when they pretend that literally anything they see in WNBA highlights is remotely impressive.

they don't make money and never have

like mentioned before... the WNBA has never had a profitable year, month, week, or day in its 26-year history... yet the salaries have actually continued to go up

in 2023, the average WNBA player salary is approximately $150,000... with the highest paid around $250,000. that's for three months of work in a league that loses tens of millions of a dollars every year.

Was just commenting on this to someone yesterday. Nobody gives a flying motherfrick about the WNBA. The much bigger story for me to watch is how embarrassingly desperate ESPN are for anyone whatsoever to to follow it in some way. That’s much more entertaining.

One of the funniest things about living in Portland is all of the beta males walking around in Thorns gear. There was a guy in church last week wearing a Thorns jersey and a facemask. I wanted to go subtly troll him in the coffee line but I'm trying to turn over a new leaf and to only spread kindness irl.

you ever heard of opportunity cost?

A WNBA segment on Sportscenter, or two hours of TV time for a game, costs them in terms of things that could do better ratings in those time periods, like almost anything you can think of

And yet Disney is losing money and laying people off. Just another sign of how important their agenda is.

A stat that surprised me to the extent I wasn't sure I heard right: per a NBA administrator, the average wnba fan is a white male in the 40-50 year old range. He danced all around the question : "where are all the gay female fans?

It is a league that will never be popular. Nobody wants to watch that. But they have enough money to put it in the forefront and most people will keep watching anyway. They know that.

It is a flawed business model but they don't give a shite

in last nba contract, nba forced espn to continue showing and putting like 20 mil into the sport. no wnba, no nba contract, and others get a chance to bid it. no first right of refusal

CBS had the NBA for 10 years, then NBC had it for 12, and ESPN/ABC has had it since 2002, and it’s easily been the worst of the three from a graphics/production/music standpoint.

She had more yards per carry on that "dunk" than Barry Sanders.

My aunt and female cousin, who both played college basketball, don't give a frick about the WNBA. Why should I?

SFP and ESPN just want to sweep that under the rug. it’s irrelevant.
