He'd have more trade value next summer..

How? Who wants to pay him $29 million at age 34??? What team could take him for that price where he wouldn't just be a volume shooter?
Aging star equates to rising value? Does not compute.
Large expiring contract you say? That's not the type of contract a contending team takes. That type of contract goes to teams looking to turn over their roster. Then, Melo would have to waive his no trade clause.
Knicks either trade Melo this season for peanuts or eat his contract with him disgruntled on your roster just causing friction and drama on a team going nowhere.
Knicks are reaping the fruits of their labor from the stupid contract they gave him at age 30 for a team "rebuilding". They can piss and moan that there's no good deal all they want, but they're screwed either way.

Why would they waive and pay him? If they keep him, he has to play or he can retire with no money. He won the pissing contest with Jackson. The new management could mend the fences. I just don't get the urgency for the Knicks to take so little and get it done..

Both the Knicks and Carmelo agree that he won't be there this upcoming season.
Keeping him until next summer isn't going to change anything considering he has a no-trade clause. If he's only willing to go to one or two teams, then the Knicks have to take what they can get or they'll get nothing for him.
Again, they don't want his contract on their cap sheet.

Free-agent combo forward Luc Mbah a Moute has agreed to sign with the Houston Rockets, league sources tell ESPN.
It is believed to be a one-year, veterans minimum arrangement.
Mbah a Moute, 30, played the past two seasons with the LA Clippers as the team's starting small forward. He declined a $2.3 million player option for the 2017-18 season to hit free agency this summer. He shot a career high of 39 percent from the beyond the arc last season.
For Mbah a Moute's career, he averages 6.3 points and 4.2 rebounds.

Luc Mbah a Moute can play the 3 or 4, defensively he's a net positive as well. This very well open up the doors to moving Ariza.

Knicks are talking about keeping Carmelo now.
Smart move by them. They're trying to drive up the price.

stick to your own teams please that's as pitiful a depth chart as one can make.

Tucker > Moute or vise versa, that doesn't really matter at this point.
Ryno is already part of the equation to be moved, moving an expiring Ariza to get Melo might be the an option you guys have.

At this point I'm not sure it matters. With ryno they are the second best team in the NBA. With melo in place of ryno they are still prob second best team in the NBA. Albeit a lot close to GWW. Still likely can't beat them.
Harden (Paul) / bobby brown
Paul (harden) / Gordon
Ariza / Tucker / williams
Ryno (melo) / Luc / cam Oliver
Clint / Nene / black

So they would be driving up the price for whom?
