Nothing since initial reports that the Spurs were thinking about offering something in the 9 mil range.

ETA: he's also a under the Arenas provision, so he can only get offered about 8.4 mil in his first year. If the Spurs are going to use part of the MLE to bring Gasol back, they won't really have room to bring back Simmons.

I remember when this board seriously thought McRoberts was a legit signing to convince LeBron to stay in Miami

Brilliant signing by the Spurs.

People wonder how they stay relevant. You get starter-level players on backup deals.

I would argue that if Gordon Hayward was black, he would have more hype behind him about being a 2-way star than he has now. We have in our mind the picture of a white player being a "high motor guy", "high IQ player", "brings his lunch pail", etc. and all of the other stereotypes. People aren't sure what to make of a white guy with the skills Gordon Hayward has and that makes them more skeptical of him because he's white.

Problem some truth to that. Radio hosts were talking about the pitch for Hayward being centered around his basketball IQ rather than his brand or the nightlife and what not.

A player his age with an Achilles injury... he may not even earn that contract. That's the worse injury an NBA player can have.

Worse than a concussion?

Honestly if he's only 50% of what he used to be, as a backup it's still a good deal, especially when you see Otto Porter getting $26m a year.

And on the Spurs he's not going to be asked to carry some huge load anyway.

No way. An undetected near concussion led to a 39-point blowout defeat at home. Can you imagine what a real concussion would/could do?

Were those minutes versus starters or bench players?
Well since Gobert only missed 1 game, while Hill missed 33, and Hayward missed 9 we can find some overlap.

Both Hayward and Hill missed the 12/08/16 game against GSW. Gobert was -10 in (35 minutes, 23 seconds). He was 8 for 8 from the field and 20 points and 16 rebounds.

In addition, the one game Gobert missed was the 03/11/17 game against OKC. Hayward was -19 in 21 minutes (3 of 9 from field), while Hill was -22 in 18.5 minutes.

In addition, because of the little overlap in the games Hill and Hayward missed, that means 40 of Gobert's 82 games (32 for Hill; 8 for Hayward) was missing. So given that Gobert is there best player, he was already more likely to be playing against his opponents best player, and in because either Hill and Hayward was out for so many games, then it's even more likely that when one say, he was still playing against the better players.

Either way, the data are overwhelmingly in Gobert's favor. In fact, there is not a single metric or analysis that suggests Hayward was even close to as good or valuable, let alone one that days he was better.

You obviously rate Hayward pretty high (14th) with in the league while I think you are overrating him, it's not big of a reach. That being said, regardless of where you rate Hayward, Gobert has to be higher than him (at least based on last year).

Add Rubio for hill and they go from being efficient and solid offensively to questionable at best. Defensively they're still stout.
Sure. But Hill missed 33 games last year. And only managed to play in 39% of the total minutes. So while he provided a ton of value when he was on the court (+3.6 BPM), his overall value over the season was minimized by his lack of playing time (2.2 VORP; 5.9 WARP).

Rubio on the other hand, played in 26 more games and was on the court for 925 more minutes. So while he provided less value than Hill (0.8 BPM) when on the court, the extra minutes made his overall value much closer (1.7 VORP; 4.6 WARP).

So if Rubio can stay healthy, the net loss shouldn't be as significant due to increased playing time from Hill's the year before.

Don't forever the Napier draft pick, although LeBron did express excitement for it.

Just read that the Spurs used the MLE for Gay's contract. They have to use space or an exception to sign Simmons. I believe they only have 5 mil in space. Seems like Simmons could be had with another team offering the MLE.

Simmons is a very nice player. If Olynk can get 50 mil, Simmons should get a cool 70

I believe his max is around 67 mil over 4 years, it might actually be 70 with the raises though.
