Tom Brady: There’s a lot of mediocrity in today’s NFL due to rule changes, bad coaching

Speaking to Stephen A. Smith Monday on Smith’s radio show, Brady sounded off about the state of the league.

“I think there’s a lot of mediocrity in today’s NFL. I don’t see the excellence that I saw in the past,” Brady said. “I think the coaching isn’t as good as it was, the development of young players isn’t as good as it was. The rules have allowed a lot of bad habits to get into the actual performance of the game,” he continued.

Brady went further into his point, mentioning how players, especially on defense, in years past would have been penalized way more in today’s NFL. “I look at a lot of players like Ray Lewis and Rodney Harrison and Ronnie Lott and players that impacted the game in a certain way, and every hit they made would have been a penalty. Why don’t coaches talk to their players about how to protect themselves? We used to work on the fundamentals all the time, but now they’re trying to be regulated all the time.”

Brady was the biggest crybaby and benefactor of the rule changes. He might have a point, but he’s not the one to make it.

He is 100% correct. Football is becoming so watered down. Every game feels more and more like a production with a certain cadence to it due to the style of play brought on by rule changes.

That would be Peyton Manning and the Colts after New England kicked their teeth in during the 2003 and 2004 playoffs.

Peyton Manning, Jim Irsay and Bill Polian bitched their way to changing more rules than Brady could ever dream.

The Colts cheated and pumped crowd noise into the RCA dome and Jim Irsay sat on the competition committee and got the illegal contact rule implemented after his team constantly got their asses kicked by NE in the playoffs.

Pats just took advantage of idiocitc rule changes. They didn't make them.

You can't hit QBs low because Brady tore his ACL in week 1.

One thing that can change that is to up the rookie minimum. Teams are taking undrafted rookies over veterans to save cap room.

I feel like maybe Brady was the benefactor of many of those rule changes. They allowed him to play as long as he did.

Any Manning says anything, and gomers cream themselves.

The actual GOAT offers his opinion, and it’s an issue.

Banning low hits like that was a good move. I don't think anyone debates this

I guess he has a point. I tried to watch tonight's game and got about two minutes and that was all I could take. Saw Mahomes slide like a little girl and I was done. NFL is just boring.

You missed a great game.

I think the bigger issue is officiating is the worst it’s ever been.

I'd like to see stats on if QBs are getting injured more, because it feels like it.

Favre started every game from 1993 through 2009, despite getting destroyed all the time.
Brees had his bad shoulder injury, then missed only 1 game from 2006 until 2019.
Brady had a similar streak, as did Manning (both of them, really).

Maybe it is confirmation bias, and it's just what made those guys great.

Right now you have Burrow injured for the 4th time in 4 seasons, Anthony Richardson out as a rookie, Cousins out, and Watson will have played 12 games in 3 full seasons.

The NFL is extremely watered down. No great teams anymore due to salary cap.

Dan Patrick had Steve Young on this morning & Young said every "old time " NFL QB would love to be playing with today's rules. Said Aaron Rogers is probably the last of the old guard QB's.
