similar to Euro soccer (Skybet Championship, the former Barclays Premier League...

The National Hockey League has sold naming rights to its four divisions for the first time in its history. The League announced on Tuesday that its teams will play in the Scotia NHL North Division, Honda NHL West Division, Discover NHL Central Division and the MassMutual NHL East Division during the 2020-21 season, which runs 56 games and begins on Jan. 13.

An NHL source tells ESPN that selling the naming rights to its divisions is viewed internally as a one-year only campaign.

These divisions are new for this season, as the NHL realigned its teams due to COVID-19 travel concerns and restrictions, particularly at the U.S./Canadian border. All of the league's Canadian teams are grouped into the North Division for this season. It's expected the NHL will return to traditional divisional setups in the 2021-22 season.

This is the second major sponsorship move for the NHL this season. The league previously announced that, for the first time, it would allow advertisements on player helmets. As of Tuesday, 13 teams have announced their helmet sponsors. The majority of those sponsors also hold the teams' arena naming right

The league has already gone Euro in terms of style of play, might as well go full Euro & cover the players in advertising

My undergrad was in advertising....and i still dont really understand the point of these sponsorships.

Everyone knows who Honda is. Is anybody gonna buy a Pilot because they remember it comes from the NHL west division sponsor? lol

I like the hustle. Scotiabank is such a boring sponsor for the Canadian league though.

No, but apparently Honda does, at least enough to pay to have their name on it.

That was my first thought as well. Pretty ridiculous IMO

Just another way that this whole world is about the almighty $$$.. even if it makes no sense at all, if it brings in money, then go for it. Stupid move by the NHL

Your response doesnt make any sense with my post.

Also, the whole "a company did a thing so it has to make sense" argument is odd.

Advertising is usually a waste of money.

More like the Marketing department did a thing to justify their job and salary.

If they reduce the number of commercial breaks, cover every inch of the players and stadium in ads.

Instead of the old “flash” pucks used for TV in the 90s / 2000s, will the puck now appear as a pop up ad while in the air?

Oh boy I can't wait for Scotiabank Hometown Hockey between two Scotiabank NHL North Division rivals: the Calgary Flames, sponsored by Scotiabank, and the Toronto Maple Leafs, also sponsored by Scotiabank, played in Scotiabank Arena
