Not sure why you are saying this like 6 years can't royally screw us, we aren't that far removed from 4 year deals given to Dan Uggla and BJ Upton screwing our payroll and leading to us doing a rebuild (and selling low on Kimbrel) with this same ownership. I trust Liberty about as far as I could throw them when it comes to staying the course and maintaining a high payroll.

If Liberty bumps us up into the 180 mil range consistently 30 mil to a declining Freddie won't kill us, but we are in the 150 range it will be tougher to overcome.

I want Freddie back on our team, but I'm also not going to be mad at AA if he lets him go rather than give him 6 years. 20+ mil a year deals to players over 35 has almost always blown up in the teams faces, and the few exceptions are mostly pitchers.

None of the 6 finalists for either MVP award made the postseason this year

What an absolute joke.

And I don't care what the world thinks of Tatis as some great, amazing player... You miss a month of the season and your team also finishes the year in a mudslide, you aren't remotely deserving of consideration for the MVP. It's not a "who's the most talented" award. If you aren't even available for an entire month, what is valuable about that? Bryce Harper wasn't much better in terms of games missed, and he'll probably win the stupid award.

I wish these things just didn't even exist, because they are clearly meaningless now.

AA said Saturday that Liberty has already given the go-ahead to raise the payroll. How much he couldn't/wouldn't say.

Liberty has no say so on cutting or increasing the payroll.

Between the Pujols/Votto comps and now bringing up Uggla and BJ, you really suck at this.

Uggla had a really good season in a contract year and we threw bank at him. BJ had already been regressing and was never anything more than a borderline starter that we paid like an All Star.

Freddie has arguably been the best hitter in MLB the last two seasons.

Snitker postseason report card. Outside of leaving Davidson in too long in game 5, it was one of the best, most cleanly managed postseasons I’ve ever seen. Hat tip to Snit. Snit mentioned often throughout the playoffs that he, AA and the guys “from upstairs” were meeting for hours every day going over every possible in game scenario and how to manage it so hat tip to them too, but Snit was great in game.

It’s easy in the stands or on here but to be so good in the heat of the moment is really, really impressive.

Yeah it is bizarre to compare him to those two guys.

wRC+ since the start of 2020 (minimum 500 PA)

1. Soto 171
2. Harper 164
3. Belt 163
4. Acuña 157
5. Tatis 154
6. Vlad 151
7. Freeman 149

Very negligible difference outside of Soto and a definite argument could be made for Freddie being the best imo.

I was talking about how bad contracts can screw over a franchise, not comparing performance. Freddie should be excellent the next three years, it's once he hits years 4 and 5 that it gets tricky, particularly with all the young guys getting more expensive and/or hitting their final years of arbitration.

If he's posting 2 WAR or less for 30 mil in years 5 and 6, we could have a hard time being competitive, so I wouldn't blame AA for not going 6 years, that's basically all I'm saying.

Hopefully he either gets a 4 year deal or ownership gives us a nice payroll boost so that it is a non-issue.

They are probably referring to an old comment by McGuirk where he said Liberty let him determine payroll, which is probably true within limits. But anyone who thinks the ownership of the freaking team doesn't have the ultimate say in our payroll is naive as hell.

Yeah, he really did any excellent job this postseason for the most part. Game 5 with Davidson and putting Jackson in to face Bellinger during game 6 after he had got destroyed by him the last time out were his only major mistakes.

I still feel like he was looking big picture, and managed game 5 so we could win game 6.

By SEC law, they cannot expand or contract the payroll.

Sorry,that's the deal.

ETA McGuirk has the final say so on payroll

Freddie’s short swing, combined with his size/leverage and plate discipline/understanding of the zone is gonna prevent him from falling off a cliff. And there’ll be the DH to give him some rest. His bat will absolutely play at 38. And even if it doesn’t, I know $30 million is a shite-ton to turn down, but I think he’s too proud to just cash checks knowing he’s hurting the team. He’d work something out where he could retire, but still have a role in the organization that would help make up for any lost salary.

But I honestly don’t think it’ll come down to that. You mentioned Miggy and Pujols, both of whom got fat, were chasing some all-time counting milestones that Freddie won’t be, but most importantly, they were both probably 3 years older than what you said.
