They should put some membrane canopies to give it shade similar to Munich Olympic park, and then go steal that Qatar world cup technology that they claimed was going to air condition their outdoor stadiums.

Retractable roofs are the biggest boondoggle in stadiums. Fans nearly always want it closed. It is just an added expense and maintenance nightmare.

I give Atlanta a slight pass because it was used for the Olympics, but Atlanta has its own issues, as the Georgiadome is a fine facility. It's the era of screwing taxpayers, but why?

The Georgia Dome was never going to make it past 2016. There was a 25-year lease signed in 1992. The Georgia Dome is a state-owned facility. The Falcons would be idiotic to pick up a new lease, and safety regulations would require the roof to be completely redone and make other huge renovations. Furthermore, the only real taxpayer contribution is a $300 million hotel and motel tax that does not even affect the locals.

No such thing as a free lunch, my friend.

The locals will feel the impact of that tax, even if it's just indirectly.

I should have said "will not affect the locals much, especially in comparison to other stadium deals", but the brunt of the cost is fronted by Blank and the season ticket members.

It is slightly better than most deals, true. At least Blank is footing the majority of the bill.

Sidenote - Atlanta making that deal for the Falcons is likely what cost them the Braves. Mayor only felt comfortable appeasing one billionaire I suppose.

The Braves want to be closer to their fans in the northern suburbs in Cobb and Gwinnett County.

Thanks, but I've read all the press releases. No need to regurgitate the company line.

They went to the city first for a deal, talks broke down, city officials called their bluff and said dismissively "well where else would you go?" at which point they started calling around and Cobb made them a sweetheart deal. City decided not to bother matching.

This is all on record.

It was actually a 30-year lease, but the bonds are being paid off ahead of schedule.

If SunTrust was being built at Perimeter Center, I'd believe this.

It is definitely close to the fans in Cobb.

I'm not sure it was the Braves first choice, but I expect they're pretty comfortable with the decision.

It's not like the justifications are invalid, they just might not have been the primary motivation. The 75 corridor/west side from Cobb down to MB stadium is a great stretch. It would be great if the City would recognize that the best hope for downtown is to promote the continued expansion of the west side's creep into downtown/southwest midtown area.

Time flies. They've been at the ballpark about the same length as the old Arlington stadium, believe it or not.

dang. that's crazy. i was thinking it was just about 10-15 years old or so, because i remember going to one of the last games in the old stadium and like the 2nd or 3rd game in the new one when i was pretty young.

then i remembered that's 20+ years ago and i was in Jr. High.

ETA: i love the ballpark as it is. has held up well. We always get seats behind home plate because in the summer it's the first to get shade. still hot as frick.

The roof is a big deal. I rarely go to games in July thru mid September because of the heat. I do wish the downtown Dallas stadium would have happened however. Arlington is a horrible place to visit if you
don't live closeby. There are zero restaurants or bars worth going to before/after the game.

REALLY good parking situation.

We don't own our parking lots. Even us season ticket holders have to pay normal price to park because the old owner Tom Hicks still owns all the lots.

If only Cobb would get over its hang-up about MARTA and join the system, SunTrust with a rail station would be the shite.

the "hang-up" being the same reason the "northern based" fans to whom the Braves are now catering were scared to go in town in the first place

And it's all bullshite because Cobb (along with Gwinnett and Clayton) had a ton of minorities move there without MARTA.

Wait, was something wrong with the Ballpark at Arlington?

Thought that place was still pretty damn nice.
