Remember a few years ago when UT asked fans to donate to buy new goalposts?? Clown athletic dept

that's one perspective

another perspective is - Vols just beat Bama for the first time in 15 years, and the place was ecstatic (fans rushed the field, Heupel being praised in the media and mentioned for other jobs, etc), and the UT admin decided to capitalize on the fans' excitement and "request" them to pitch in to buy new goalposts that they tore down and threw in the river

what i'm saying is, we the fans deserve some of the blame for how transactional and monetary driven CFB has become. we show up and pack out the big stadiums, buy concessions/merch, etc

so why wouldn't athletic depts ask us to shoulder more of the financial load every year?

Hey, COVID is destroying the economy. I'm the AD at Florida, let me give Dan Mullen a new contract with an unmitigated buyout while my fan base is suffering. That seems like a smart move. I could fire him for $0 right now, but I think I'll put the school on the hook for $12M. That seems smart. Then I'll fire him next year when the coaching moves are out of control and it costs my school an extra $20M to move things around. After that move doesn't work, I'll make the fans and boosters pay over $50M to get rid of the next guy and bring in his replacement. I'm an athletic director and I'm smart with other people's money. Hey, Tennessee, what kinds of plans do you have?

Oh, we're going to charge a talent fee to the fans. We know they come for the name on the front of the jersey, and that's why we're going to charge them even more money for the names on the back of the jerseys. We realize a family of four making $80k a year, spending 5% of their gross income to just be a fan, is really eager to send us more money, not for their school, but for players that now have no incentive to develop a bond and affection for the same school. I don't see how this could go wrong.

I believe Louisiana has allowed NIL deals for high school athletes for a couple years now.

As a Tennessee fan who has been a season ticket holder since 1993 I have no problem paying 10% more to help acquire more talent.

I think it will work just fine for Tennessee. Renewed excitement in the athletic department after finally getting over the hump and winning the CWS. Got maybe the most exciting and explosive offense in college football and look to be a real contender for NC. Especially surrounded by 2 of the all-time runs in CFB by maybe their 2 biggest rivals in Bama and Georgia. “Hey, you wanna keep seeing guys like Nico throw the all around and score 65 points in a single half? Wanna help take the next step and start seriously competing for the CFP Championship on an annual basis? What do you think about throwing in another $100 a seat per year?”

I bet every last one of them is in and most would probably be in for even more. There will be a few fanbases who would be all in on this. But there will be a lot that won’t. Will they do it begrudgingly or will there be further separation of the haves and have nots? Or will this be a way for schools with wealthy alumni bases who are kinda average to close the gap? Just another unintended consequence that we’ll have to see how it shakes out. There has to be a tipping point. But are we even close to it? I hope. But who knows.

Rocky Top is going to have to stop buying cigs, dip, and Natural Light just to afford tickets.

Whoever handled this from a PR standpoint needs to find a new job. There are 50 better ways to spoon feed something like this to fans. “Talent fee” is inexcusable.

You are correct. Why not just raise the prices 10% and not say where the money is going? Calling it out as a 10% increase for talent fee, is going to push fans away.

If LSU does that, I'm dropping my tickets.

I wonder at a certain point the market will start regulating itself. Right now it’s a free for all but eventually boosters will get tired of paying huge sums for talent that doesn’t see the field.

Not agreeing with this “talent fee”, but not sure in this day a household with two children making 80k/yr should be spending $4k on college football.

it's not possible to go back to how things SHOULD be.

And how should they be? A program in the southeast recruiting a freak athlete from California who doesn’t really even belong in college but winning is too important? Assistant coaches making 10x what professors make that are teaching real world skills?

College football has been warped for a long time. It isn’t about education. It’s an entertainment entity.

We didn't really think the universities were gonna foot these bills did we? Before the lawsuit and figure was settled, the schools were devising ways to get the fans to pay for it. Their eagerness to settle on that figure after defeat was inevitable should tell you the schools have plans to pass the buck on it. They're making out in reality. TV pays for it all. They're just recouping through collectives and things like this. And they'll gradually bleed it from us as they always have.

Fans in the stadium get screwed by the Athletic Department because they don't want to give up their piece of ticket revenues to pay players, so they increase ticket prices.

Fans in the stadium and at home get screwed by the Athletic Department because they want all of the TV money that they can get and we end up with games like LSU vs USCe lasting 4 hours and 12 minutes.

At some point, fans will have had enough and find other things to do with their time and money.

College sports is dead, can we just admit that now? It's simply minor league professional sports now.

Maybe, but I can always let my tickets go. Some people will let theirs go and they will be snatched up immediately by someone else. For every fan that is pissed about it there are other fans who are happy to take their tickets. Even when Tennessee was really bad they would sell out, people may have not shown up but they bought the tickets. This is not going to go away.
