I'm legit curious - what is the argument against allowing football players to push football players?

It turns short yardage/goal line situations into rugby scrums.

What bothers me about it is that it highlights the flaw with forward progress even further. The QB can be stalled and then the RB can come behind and push and they get those yards. If it was reversed and the dline pushed the QB backwards it doesn't count for shite.

Great point

What defense will be the first to get in a counter shove formation?

The defense against it is swinging someone in from the side and hitting knees.

Or time the snap count and knock the hell out of the center and QB. Defense ought to get in air with LBs while DL goes low.

If offside, it’ll the be a first down. Gotta be willingly. But the tush push is likely getting first down with it anyway.

Yet to hear a reasonable argument for it not being legal

Only a matter of time until someone tries to jump in and spear the QB in the head during the push to try and cause a fumble.

Who cares. Figure out how to stop it and it’ll go away. It’s a nice throwback and it’s awesome.

It’s illegal for the defense to line up similarly to shove other defenders.

Teams

Who else has used this play successfully...ever?

The Eagles own this play because they are the only ones running it successfully. To change the rule would be penalizing them and only them.

The only way the NFL is going to ban that play is in the name of "player safety".

It should only be legal for one man to willingly touch another man’s butt in San Francisco and certain parts of the French Quarter. Since the Superdome is not located in those parts of the French Quarter and Levi’s Stadium is located in Santa Clara; it should be illegal.

In rugby, the ball carrier has to touch the ball down to the ground with control, not just cross the goalline

I would love for this to be the rule in football.

How can you defend it? Seriously, the QB is the most protected player on the field. Like someone said earlier forward progress is given even if he runs into a wall because he is getting pushed. If they destroy the QB 15 yards can be given to the offense. I would tell my defense to destroy the QB every chance they got but like I said you will get penalized.

It used to be. Hence the term "touch down".

Why? It was illegal for decades.
