Imagine that recruiting pitch to a free agent:

Come to our team, where we have a consistently low payroll and where you will have to rent property in the Tampa area *and* Montreal and also hire a really brilliant accountant and possibly play in two worn-down domes. Sign me up!!

My God. I hadn't even thought of that. That's one of those deals where if you're guy nearing the end of your career and you get traded, you say "Ehhh, think I'll look into coaching high school baseball back in the old hometown."

This has to be a wedge to get Tampa to approve a new stadium right? The more I think about this and the logistics of it...it’s ridiculous.

I am with the city of Tampa/St Pete. If Sternberg wants a new stadium so bad, then finance it your self. He wants the tax payers to take the bill, while he retains surrounding real estate rights and gains value on his team. frick that. Move your team, you broke arse mother ficker. The Tampa area can look south for a good reason to not cover a stadium build.

And why would two cities build them new stadiums for only partial seasons.

They would have two brand new stadiums.

You know Montreal would want them full time at some point in the future.

Tamps and Miami are both terrible markets with the current attendance numbers.

Move Rays to Montreal and move Marlins to Portland.

Not Tampa, that's for sure. They can have a prime-time game and not fill the stadium 1/3. Put the Rangers at a terrible 1PM start, packed house.

This is one of the worst ideas in sports history

This has a "1976 ABA" feel to it when some of their teams played in more than 1 city.

Or the NBA when the Kings were the Kansas City-Omaha Kings for a couple years. How well did that work? They eventually ended up in Sacramento.

The frick? This is so weird if true. What will their name be? The Tampa Bay-Montreal Expo Rays?

Just move the damn team to Montreal and call them the Expos.

And where would playoff games be played?

This is such a stupid idea.

It can only be one of two scenarios. 1) They're going to move the team to Montreal but it's going to take a few years for Montreal to build a new stadium and they don't want to play 81 home games a year in Olympic Stadium. Basically the same situation that the Raiders have with Las Vegas and Oakland. 2) The Rays ownership are trying to gain leverage to build a new stadium in Tampa. After all, the new Ybor stadium project was cancelled last year and attempts to restart the negotiations for a new stadium has probably fallen on deaf ears. The Rays have to do something drastic to gain Tampa's attention. Threatening to relocate the team is really the only card they have left.

Just move the fricking team. Florida has already proven they can’t support a pro franchise

Cool. The two cities with the lowest attendance in the history of baseball get to share a team.

This is so dumb. Montreal doesn’t deserve another team one bit. Give an American city a chance first and foremost. Another Canadien team doesn’t do anything for the game. If anything, MLB should be encouraging them to move into Latin America. Mexico City or San Juan. Two countries that love the sport of beaseball.

Montreal didn't deserve what Jeffrey Loria did to them either.

Per Wikipedia:
quote:

One of Loria's first acts was to reiterate demands for a new park for the Expos to replace Olympic Stadium, of which he bluntly said, "We cannot stay here."[9] He lost a considerable amount of goodwill with Expos fans when the team was not able to reach an agreement for television and English-speaking radio coverage during the 2000 season, as the Expos tried to increase their revenue from broadcast rights. He also sought more public funding for a planned downtown ballpark, Labatt Park.[8] However, the provincial and municipal governments balked at committing more money to the project. Premier Lucien Bouchard said that he could not support using public funds to build ballparks when the province was being forced to shut down hospitals. Additionally, Bouchard did not like that Olympic Stadium still had not been paid for 25 years after being built,[8][9] and ultimately wouldn't be paid for until 2006.

Dude never intended to have the team stay in Montreal. He was part of the ownership team in 1999 and sold the team to MLB in 2002.

What's the infatuation with bringing MLB back to Montreal? I'm old enough to remember when attendance Expos attendance plummeted, they couldn't get a new stadium built and MLB ultimately purchased the team and left Montreal
