I've just been here my whole life and my family has been here five generations.

Anyway, here's an article that describe what I am talking about:

The Importance of the 30-Minute Population Radius on MLB Attendance

Not only that, but there are no people living more than a couple miles west/east/south of the current stadium location because it's water.

Dude, if you've lived here your whole life you could take two minutes to google population numbers. There are 1m people in Pinellas. 1.5m in Hillsborough. Probably 200k live in Ruskin/Apollo Beach and it's easier to get to St. Pete from there than it is to Tampa.

St. Pete allows you to draw from Palmetto, Parish, Manatee, Sarasota, and Arcadia.

Pretending like moving the stadium to Tampa will be a game changer is just a terrible take. At best it's a push in terms of whether it's better or not. Most people I know prefer to go to St. Pete than Tampa anyways.

I know the population numbers. I also know how to look at a map.

Look how much land a 10 mile radius from the Trop, Ybor and Fairgrounds includes. The Trop is like 50% water.

Tropicana:

Tropicana

Ybor:

Ybor

Fairgrounds:

Fairgrounds

I give the As more of a pass because California and the Bay Area in general is notoriously difficult for pro teams to deal with.

Hence the Raiders leaving Oakland twice, the Niners leaving for another part of the area, the Giants nearly leaving for St Pete in the 90s because the area didn’t want to replace Candlestick, etc.

The Tampa area may also be difficult to deal with but not as notoriously so.

Looks like the Marlins dropped "Florida" in the name too quickly.

Today's word of the day is fixed. Fixed income and fixed loyalties. I'll leave it to you to figure out how that changes the equation.

A’s ownership is terrible but they managed to secure a new stadium somewhere, whatever you think of how that played out. The uncertainty around a venue for the Rays makes the situation untenable for MLB I would imagine

I actually agree; if done right in St Pete it could work. Stadium is currently too isolated and distant from activity. They have the space to get it close, create an awesome experience.

What happened to the ferry idea? I remember talk about 8-9 years ago it seems. Was supposed to help alleviate that I-275 traffic.

I live on the Pinellas side and we aren’t happy with ownership either. City council has been a joke as well for the most part. Kids enjoy the Trop as they do a few games with their school each year, but it’s an absolute eyesore atm.

Here’s a local journalist with how most of us feel.

The answer is Bob Nutting, the owner of the Pirates.

Top 5 stadium in baseball, really top 2. Fanbase that has been abused over the years, yet still shows up. Most people think of Pittsburgh as a football town, but in reality it was a baseball town for a long time and only because of how bad the Pirates have been since the '93 strike have the Pirates declined in popularity. Meanwhile, Nutting has pulled hundreds of millions out of that franchise through revenue sharing and has made almost no commitment to win.

I guarantee the Pirates would sell out PNC every game if they were consistently competitive. It is my favorite ballpark and I love the atmosphere around there. Imagine how it would be sold out. Steelers fandom lite.

Sure. Not arguing against that. Idk if they would sell out all 82 games because no one does but yes, I have no doubts the Pirates would be supported well if they weren't being run into the ground

I hear they can't sell out the Yankees Minor League Stadium this season. Other than that, I can't imagine what went wrong.

About 20k game last year. Right with the Orioles, Mets and White Sox last year. Much smaller market and the stadium only holds 35-38k. So even the big games (if there are ever any) won’t push that number up.
