Super Bowl Viewership Drops To Historic Low For NFL & CBS; Most Streamed Game Ever

There was a lot of history at Super Bowl LV on Sunday.
Unfortunately, not all of it looks good when it comes to how many people actually watched – and we’re not just talking about Nielsen’s unprecedented delay in getting the actual data out.
In figures released this morning by CBS Sports, the big game had a total audience of 96.4 million viewers on CBS and a bundle of platforms and outlets, according to Nielsen.
Confirming the suspicions that many had even going into the match-up between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Kansas City Chiefs, that is the least watched Super Bowl in recent history.
With around 90.8 million viewers on CBS alone, the 2021 Super Bowl is still the most watched show of the past year. With a 10% fall from what Fox had on its broadcast network last year, the 55th Super Bowl had the smallest network audience since the very different era of 2005.

The bruising viewership asides, There were some other pretty major historical aspects to Sunday’s gridiron face-off.
On the digital curve, Super Bowl LV was the most live-streamed in history, averaging 5.7 million viewers per minute – which is up 69% from 2020’s pervious high.

Streaming is really picking up steam.

Would’ve thought it would be higher considering all the calls to not have parties.

People are tired of 1. Seeing Brady there and 2. seeing a team get screwed for Brady’s benefit.

The slam poetry for the coin toss didn’t help? Crazy

Yuge
Network TV as a whole is getting wrecked lately though

Nah you are dumb.

And that's with Mahomes vs. Brady, and less Super Bowl parties.
That's bad for NFL.

The idea that the Superbowl should be some sort of big important national event is probably the biggest con the NFL ever pulled.
People who aren't football fans or even sports fans all watched it anyway.
I think in the era of new media that's not going to be true.

I think there are a lot if eyeballs on the game that aren't being counted and have slipped through these ratings systems. Streaming options, illegal streaming options. Especially the younger crowd. My 18 year old watched the game but I don't know what platform he used. I'll stream it somewhere was his response.
I turned off the pregame BS and didn't watch until kickoff. The woke crap is turning people off. If it wasn't the Super Bowl I would have turned it off and stayed away. I'm sure some did that.

Is there any sport where ratings have been good? Golf got out to a hot start as one of the first sports back, but the Masters got horrendous ratings. World Series and NBA Finals ratings were both horrendous. CFP Playoff was a disaster.
I think there are systematic issues here more than anything on the micro level. The pandemic is speeding up media trends that were already taking place especially in young people.

Using the entire event to pander to 13% of the population while calling 87% of the population a piece of shite did not bring in the big numbers?
Strange
More terrorism from the people that hate diversity (except in the actual NFL it would be racist for it to be diverse).

I agree with that, but the Super Bowl is the biggest sporting event of all. I'm not sure they expected this.

Truth is the nerd revolution is taking over. Younger people are more interested in Marvel comics and Big Bang Theory than they are sports. The wussification of America is a real thing. Our heroes are no longer Mickey Mantle or Joe Namath they are soy boy's like Sheldon from BBT.
Gilbert was right in Revenge of the Nerds. "There's a lot more of us than there are of you."

the pandemic may have helped begin the burst of the sports bubble
lack of crowds hurts too, it just doesn't feel like a major event without them.

For the last twenty years it seems like when there is a decision to be made, the NFL makes the wrong choice every single time.

Why would someone illegally stream a game on network TV?

Probably partly true.
I also think it's the effect of the politicization of sports. They've been infiltrating sports with social justice and political bullshite for 10-15 years now, and it's slowly pushed a lot of people away.
Mix that with cord cutting, and this is what you get. Turning on ESPN used to take 10 seconds. It was a habit. You'd watch whatever they had on. Now, you have to open their shitty app, log in with your cable provider every third time even though they should have your info saved by now, pick what you want to watch, deal with stream lags, etc. It is much more time consuming. And then you get the app open and there's not really anything you feel like watching anyways.
People start to watch other things. There's a lot of factors in play, but they are all leading to sports viewership tanking in America.

I don't know how they haven't adjusted to some newer viewing trends. Even when they get a good premise for a show, they stretch it out and kill it by trying to squeeze 20-24 episodes out of it each season. You end up with nothing but repetitive procedural dramas.

I must not have watched that Super Bowl. You should have tuned in to the one that I watched.
