the Masters got horrendous ratings. World Series and NBA Finals ratings were both horrendous. CFP Playoff was a disaster.

And every single one of those called half the country a nazi and said that 13% of the country is better than everyone else

So of course they are all in the shitter

The refs were an issue, but did not decide the game..... they let Tampa get away with things they were calling on KC..... but the Tampa Pass rush was a huge factor as was Tampa’s offensive line. Brady stayed clean the whole night.

Of course it is. But in normal years, fans are part of the experience. Even the athletes say that. Fans are as important as the athletes on the field are to make the product complete.

We’re missing a portion of the formula right now. When you’re missing a portion of something, it’ll never be correct.

Fans will come back and sports will return to what I was a year and a half ago. Now if they would stop allowing athletes to pander their personal political opinions all over television, it would help even more. NBA told them to stfu about it for the most part because they were losing money and eyeballs. Sooner or later, that strategy will have to continue to catch on because their numbers will continue to fall.

They know it’s taking a toll on them. But they’ll never admit it because of twitters cancel army. At some point, someone will have to stand up to them.

I’ve been a sports fan my whole life and have watched every SB... and I watched this one the whole way through... now I have said to me the SB has lost its luster. But I’m old school.... but I would rather just break the game down as it went than getting involved in all the political crap going on......

Would’ve thought it would be higher considering all the calls to not have parties.

That's exactly why they were calling for that. Bars hurt viewership. Doesn't look like it worked.

I believe it as fact, rather than theory, as I began noticing it prior to 2017 specifically on ESPN, and Not during broadcasts...... now it has leaked into every aspect of the game including commercials, no one wants to watch that shite.

I can pinpoint the exact 2 moments in Fall/Winter of 2011 that turned me 100% against sports media and the sport themselves that they are entwined with/propogandize for:

1. November 2011: Jerry Sandusky scandal breaks and ESPN runs coverage of child rape 24/7 on their networks for weeks on end. At no point was coverage of this from a "sports perspective" necessary or welcome. My company kept it on at work all day and having to see pieces of shite go on and defend Joe Pa's legacy and shite and hear about those poor kids really put me in a bad place for a long time.

2. November-January 2011: Tebowmania in Denver. A story no one on the planet was allowed to enjoy. Naked media creation of building up Tebow only to tear him down. Merrill Hodge granted free license to say whatever horrible things about Tim he wanted with no repercussion every single day. His OT TD pass against Pittsburgh should have been one of the highlights of the decade by any reasonable measure, but millions of football fans were brainwashed to vomit out "I don't mind him but hate the story" "it'll never last" and most famously "fake Christian!"

Good point. The NFL as we knew it is over. Will people still watch? Sure they will. However they have lost a lot of viewers that they will never get back

I don’t know if this is relevant to the Super Bowl. Not saying it isn’t but I those stunts certainly permanently damaged ESPN’s brand with a lot of viewers. Those were short term ratings gimmicks that were counter productive in the end.

ESPN has a separate issue right now, especially with college football. The product they’re putting out is just soulless and corporate. Makes me worried about the upcoming SEC Contract.

More commenting on the widespread comments here about the erosion of joy in sports, the politics, etc. The Jenner moment was a milestone in all of this in my mind. At that moment ESPN declared they were all in.

Take away the TD that was the result of two bad PI calls before half

The TD before half was a result of KC calling two timeouts in an attempt to get the ball back. But yeah, let’s blame it on refs

Why would someone illegally stream a game on network TV?

Live in a rural area too far for antennas to pick up networks.

Michael Jordan got the highest ratings in NBA history when he was chasing its sixth championship in a span of eight years while Tom Brady got the lowest SB ratings in 16 years. Who's the real GOAT?

Wasn't ESPN's call - that was all Disney/ABC fulfilling their end of a negotiation to land the first interview she had post-transition. ESPN was just a high profile public bargaining chip in one of the most insane, pointless bidding wars in history.

Why blame ESPN when you can rightfully blame the people who proved they would watch Jenner get interviewed by anyone who no reason but morbid curiosity.

there's always been politics in sports but I think social media has given them a much larger mic than they've had in the past. There's no filter anymore and they largely don't understand a lot of people don't want or care for their opinions on everything because twitter is a giant echo chamber of people applauding them.

Because it's just easier to do that when I've been doing it all year.
