Stephen Strasburg, the 2019 World Series MVP whose career was derailed by injuries, officially was listed by Major League Baseball on Saturday as being retired.

This had been the expected outcome for quite some time, but it was unclear when -- and how -- word would emerge. In August, a person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press that Strasburg had decided not to try to resume pitching.

Strasburg, 35, was a hard-throwing right-hander who was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 amateur draft and briefly rose to stardom, leading the franchise to the first championship in Washington Nationals history.

Thoracic outlet syndrome is brutal for pitchers. This is what cut Matt Harvey's career short, too.

Will Harris, too.

He had a rib removed but I don’t think he was able to recover from the surgery.

I still remember his debut. He was absolutely electric that night. Never became the absolute pitcher best in baseball that it appeared he was destined to be. But still a great career.

Pretty sure he was outstanding the entire postseason but I have nightmares about how unhittable he and Scherzer were in that 2019 World Series

Trevor Bauer predicted this outcome a long time ago. When he was a draft prospect he showed teams footage and told them what was going to happen.

not sure why people are downvoting you but you’re right before the season Paul had last year Strasburg was the single most dominant pitcher I’ve ever seen in college.

Seems like we've been seeing a lot more thoracic outlet syndrome in baseball players. Was that always the case?
