Not a sports term....
But sportscasters have always loved it.
Everything is ironic.
It baffles. They equate irony with a frickin' coincidence or worse.

“It all depends on the spot of the ball.”

These aren't terms, they're objective verifiable data points that directly correlate to success.
Can a data point not also be a term that’s thrown around too much?

Jay Bilas use to say “strong with the ball” multiple times in any segment. He also fell in love with “second jump ability” and tried to fit that in multiple times

When was the last time you heard this in each sport?
For football:
Caleb Williams
Before him was Trevor Lawrence
Before him Andrew Luck
For NBA:
Victor Wembanyama (proper use of term)
Zion before him
Ben Simmons before him
Andrew Wiggins before him
Anthony Davis before him

Certain ordinary terms that aren't necessarily "thrown around too much," but suddenly became very popular.
line to gain
chunk plays
Hmm, AI says that "line to gain" became popular when the yellow first-down line started showing up on our TV screens, but that was 25 years ago!
I think this was played out. I haven't heard this on TV in a long time, and I watch all of the Lions games.
