And the game sucks to watch.
Five 6'8" guys run down the court and one throws up a 3, repeat.
They should get rid of the 3 pointer.

Its evolved over time based on analytics.
Thru last season
But there is still value in 2pt shots. Last night OKC beat Atlanta 140-129. You would think OKC shot a ton of 3’s to score so much. In fact it was opposite:
OKC 3’s: 12-32 / 37.5% (36 pts)
Hawk 3’s: 25-54 / 46.3% (75 pts)
OKC took 98 shots to 97 for Hawks.
Hawks had 46 tot shot makes.
OKC had 53 tot shot makes.
Hawks made 21 shots from 2
OKC made 41 shots from 2
This shows you can overcome a massive night from Hawks in 3 makes with 2’s.
One thing stats don’t always factor in is the 3 misses usually creates long rebounds and many fast breaks going other way. That leads to easier buckets plus more fouls as team who missed 3 is out of position and not able to defend as well with mismatches. That means they foul more. Thats the down side to missed 3’s.
As a rule a team that shot so well from 3 - like Hawks last night - should win going away. But OKC overcame it by taking way more 2 shots and overcoming.
I would like to see the 3 line moved back a bit. Hard to do in corners unless you eliminate them via a new line that doesn’t allow corner 3’s.

The pure athleticism of today’s individual NBA players are incomparable but the overall quality of the game and the league are frankly dull compared to its golden age.

Eventually the analytics and subsequent strategies become so widespread that it opens the window for doing something different, or reverting back to old school strategies.
That's my theory at least.
Teams will eventually forget how to defend mid range and low post scorers and open the window for someone to exploit that.
Same for football. Get a team out there that can line up under center and pick up 5 yds per carry every down and they could cause havoc.

The problem with basketball is that the 3 point line is still a cheat code and it creates a structural issue in terms of efficient play. Baseball is trending towards the same issue with homeruns, from what I hear.
It's not like football which is a much more mentally demanding and complex game, where its' more trends > exploit > conformity > trends > new exploit on repeat.
*ETA: although the FG is clearly becoming something of a cheat code with how amazing kickers are getting

Football has it now with kickoffs. Most teams start on 30 to 35 yard line. Used to be the 20. Thats a series or two less than old days.
In NBA, this is what SGA is doing, exploiting the midrange area. It’s also why he gets calls because he is driving more. He has the most drives in the last 5 years of all NBA players. Lets look at stats:
SGA has taken 632 shots this year. 160 from 3 so 472 from 2. 25.3% from 3 which is low.
Luka has taken 520 shots this year. 244 from 3 so 276 from 2. 46.9% from 3
Curry has taken 482 shots this year. 292 from 3 so 190 from 2. 60.6% from 3
You probably can’t find another top 50 player (not counting centers) who takes less 3 tries than SGA. I think he is realizing and exploiting an area that so many players have forgot or ignore.

Lots of great points in this thread. The gameplay sucks. Sometimes, it’s a chore to watch my own team, and they have a generational talent.
The disconnect with the fans is happening across all sports. Most of these guys don’t even care to entertain. Baseball is unique, in that you’ll have low level minor league lifers that will be your best friend, and a teammate driving a 6 figure car because he’s a bonus baby.

The thing is players don't really decide how the game is played, the rules decide it.
Back in the 80s and 90s basketball was largely an iso-dominated game with bigs dribbling down the shot clock every time down the court. Players mostly couldn't shoot very well and the ball usually stopped with the team's best player because the illegal defense rules discouraged ball movement.
When the league took out the illegal defense teams had to adapt to move the ball around and learn how to shoot more efficiently. They literally can't play the game the same way that they played it in the 80s or 90s.

I took my son to go see the Warriors vs the Pelicans for his birthday when they came a few years ago. He was so excited and I wanted him to have the same experience I had on my birthday when my dad took me to go see the Lakers in 2001.
As we are driving to the arena, we hear on the radio that all starters for Warriors are sitting out since they played Miami the night before. My son was crushed and deflated and I was pissed because people come out to see their favorite players and want to see the best players in the NBA. Players never say out and they had passion and love for the game. Players knew people came out to see them and never wanted to disappoint them. These players don’t have the same passion.
I already been started losing interest in the NBA but stuff like that will drive people away for good when you pay money to see starters sit on the bench when nothing is wrong with them.

The Malice in the Palace also was the reason hard fouls were taken out of the game & why the flagrant foul system was implemented. People tend to remember Ron Artest & the Pacers fighting Piston fans but it was a hard foul by Ron Artest on Ben Wallace that triggered the whole thing.

That sucks. But its not every team sitting stars. OKC doesn’t do it. We played back to back home games Sun/Mon and all played who weren’t injured.
I do wonder, we have a young team. And GS has an older one. That might account for it. And if as our players age will they too sit? But I think its more how many years someone played before the sitting starts. And it does suck because a lot of fans plan their games well in advance and can’t cancel last minute or even last day.

The Spurs did it. I ended up going to some games where starters didn’t play. Granted, I always found ways to get tix for cheap, so it wasn’t a huge loss. I did, however, drive 4 hours round trip and get a meal up there, so it adds up.
Fact is, most of us posters grind at work. You take what few sick days you can when you need it. The job will still get done anyway. In sports, you have thousands of fans that will spend anywhere from 50-hundreds of dollars to see specific players.

Coach Pop was the first one to start sitting starters so they could rest and not get worn out during the season and others but not all followed.

Adam Silver has ruined the actual product on the court by letting offenses do whatever they want and creating a situation where it's impossible to defend.
Thinking basketball ran a good video on this a few weeks ago. Players now just mindlessly crash into defenders and get calls, push off non-stop, travel, and carry with impunity.
