He went 15-17. Not great but it wasn't as big of a disaster as some make it out to be

The NFL is all about coaching.

To an extent. The disparity between teams isn't as big as it can be in college for damn sure but talent, especially at QB, still matters a ton.

quote:

That's what people are talking about. Coaching. Not name brand, what's hot now, filling the stable with moneybag men. Coaching.

Name brand sure did a lot of good for the coaches before Saban right? It mattered at LSU coming out the 90s, it mattered for Michigan St coming off sanctions? Because those were so hot when Saban came in

quote:

Pete Carroll proved he could coach in the Pros without an advantage.

Not the first two times with the Jets or Patriots. Saban was only in the NFL two years. If you only take Carroll's first two years in the NFL then he's less successful than Saban. He just tried it more times. And finally got it together at his 3rd try in Seattle after a hiatus back to college.

quote:

Saban never has. And he loses games with by far the most talented rosters. That's coaching. Great recruiter but we're talking about pure coaching, which he sucked donkey dick at the Pro level where everyone is equal.... No recruiting, no bag men, just draft picks.

Again, being a head coach in college encompasses all of those things. Saban is not a playcaller or a great X and O, gameday coach. He is however great at having a vision, getting recruits on campus (again, being a good recruiter shouldn't be a knock against him like you're making it out to be, that's part of being a college HC), having a S+C program, having a vision of what offense and defense to run and hiring appropriate assistants to do so.

The point of Saban coaching is assembling a great staff and a great roster, and preparing them 6 days of the week so on that 7th day, Saturday, they're prepared to play the game to the best of his roster and staff's abilities. And he's been elite at that for almost 3 decades now.

At the NFL level he'd be a better GM than HC imo. But at the college level he's the GOAT college coach for the aforementioned reasons.

The should have lost 2-3 more last year but didn’t and wound up in the NC, and this could be loss 4 this year that’s also coaching

Well Saban didn't invent shite. But Walter Camp did.

I'd say "the father of American Football" ranks higher.

Don't you think? His coaching tree is:

John Heisman, Amos Alonzo Stagg, Pop Warner, Fielding H. Yost, and George Halas.

Saban has the longevity and consistency

I would put Jimmy Johnson and Pete Carroll over him

He’s the best. I don’t know how you argue with that

There's more to being a head coach than being a playcaller on Saturdays. Saban was never the best at that but that was never the aspect that made him the GOAT HC anyways.

Agree 100%. His staff has been a revolving door, but he's continued to win and compete for championships. Look at his roster of championship QBs for crying out loud and tell me he's not the greatest of all time. He is, by a lot.

Being a great recruiter while part of the job doesn’t make you a great coach.

Bear was better.

Make playoffs available in his time as in Saban's and those 66 and 78 teams probably win titles.

Unless Kirby gets to 6 or 7 titles. I mean people worshiped the careers of Tom Osborne, Bowden, spurrier, paterno, and these guys were great with the less than 3 championships. What Saban did was Pat Summit Esque. Y’all need to worship and cheer him in his retirement years. I don’t see how he can ever get another. Unless he can last until the playoff is like college basketball

I’d like to see this list of better defensive Xs and Os coaches.

You laugh but I’m willing to bet both would have 1-2 more NC if they got mulligans and a 4 team playoff.

Best recruiter. When you have the best atheletes you should win most of the time. Horrible game day coach. Going for 2 twice cost bama the game.

I’ve always wondered if an unknown Saban could go to Kstate and pull off what Snyder did.

I doubt it. If you want to talk about who the greatest pure scheming/X and O coach ever was, Bill Snyder is way up on the list. Maybe at the top.
