How does a team like Rutgers not just cruise along while collecting that sweet big ten tv money without doing shite?
Because it’s expensive to fly 5+ to almost every single conference game for every single sport.

They only raised $8m or something last year which is insanely low. It says in the article the big10 averages $39M.
They are $47M in the hole this year.

Sounds like someone needs an audit. A thorough forensic audit.

Imagine how many scholarships could have been. We waste a frick ton of money on sports. Especially the loser schools. And I don't care what they say, an invitation to the potato bowl is not going to generate enough goodwill to make up for that.
Hello, there is the NCAAM tourney that schools pay to be in. WTF.

This is the overlooked time bomb we forget about. We discuss it and it’s in the back of peoples minds but what’s going to happen when the debt bubble explodes on the keeping up with the Jones’ schools?.
This is coming sooner than later

How can they operate if there is no money to pay for....things like uniforms, travel to games, food for players, salaries for coaching staffs, and on and on.
That's a whole lot of dollars spent but where did the money to pay for all that come from or not come from and who is owed?

The Rutgers Football Team has had one 8+ win season in the last 13 tries.
In Men's Basketball, since 1991, Rutgers has been to the NCAA Tournament three times (In-State Rival Seton Hall has double-digit appearances during the same time frame).
Why would anyone contribute to NIL and their RFund? They are 36 miles from New York City. A lot more rewarding things to spend on for sports entertainment.
And then from a ticket sales standpoint: Next year they get Indiana, Michigan, Nebraska, and USC to come to campus for football. Shame on them if they can't sell enough away game tickets for just those four games to balance a budget.

I’d like to see how many bowl games are actually profitable for schools, if any.

Part of the problem is going the entire time for the bowl. Simply flying the team to Tampa is not that expensive, bowls pay more than your avg conference or non conference games and those are affordable enough.
It’s going for a week and celebrating and bringing every tom dick and harry that likely adds up.

It’s silly that people still donate.

How long before these universities start scaling back their athletic departments?

Pretty crazy when you think about the number of wealthy alumni they have. The guy that founded Home Depot and the guy that founded ESPN both went to Rutgers.

Doesn't only about 30-40 of the 300+ D1 athletic programs actually turn a profit on a regular basis?

They probably are in the red but are they $78M in the red?

Member when Vanderbilt folded its athletic department into Student Life and got better on the field?

It's hard to believe just based on the fact they don't have any big-name head coaches in any sport that would require a top-tier annual salary. It's not as if a Saban or Harbaugh or whoever are coaching there (in any sport).
