Rumor: SEC looking to stay at 8, form annual B10 challenge to sell as standalone TV deal

Matt Hayes of USA Today had some very interesting talk today with SEC Mike Podcast.
Cliffs on interview:
- Schools feel Texas got preferential treatment from SEC
- Likely SEC stays at 8 conf games and tries to convince Big 10 to go back to 8 and form some sort of SEC/Big 10 Challenge package and sell as a standalone package to networks for big $$. Could be 18-20 additional games.
- This eliminates a cupcake pay game, but still leaves enough games for 1-2 cupcakes and preserves OOC traditional games (SCar-Clemson, Fla-FSU, UGA-GT, etc.)
- Fla - UGA both want to keep the Cocktail party at Jax, New stadium build could net them $6-7M each annually (typical home games make $3-4M).
-Everyone is scrambling to mile every penny they can for the inevitable $20-25M player salary fund.

Mates, lets make them Friday night games and put them on Amazon Prime and Peacock for additional revenue

You're probably not far off from the platform it would be in (Netflix is really trying to get in live events, too). But a bidding war between the streaming giants would make the most $$.
I could see it being the 2nd and 3rd weeks of the season, (everybody starts with a cupcake), then start the conf seasons in week 4.

The schools with strong in-state OOC rivals will always get fricked in these new scheduling scenarios.

I just thought about Baton Rouge game day traffic colliding with work traffic. Oh my God

Even as an LSU fan I recognize this. The SEC shook hands with the devil.

JFC I flat out DGAF about 3/4 of the Big 10 and now we're going to be forced into playing games against f-ing Rutgers, Purdue, Maryland etc.

If I’m a big ten fan and get sent back to 8 conference games I am pissed.

This is a tale as old as time.

The reality is this is pretty easy for P2 programs. It involves administrative and coaching salary cuts across the board. They just don’t want to do that.
Most expenses in college athletics are not necessary. They exist just because the program has to spend the money somewhere.

Hate this. Other SEC opponents are more interesting than all but the best B1G programs.

I’d rather push the SEC schedule to 10 games and tell the Big Ten to frick itself.

Sucks for the mid level schools that need the paydays but honestly nobody wants to have middle Tennessee or furman or old dominion on their schedule
I’d rather have a good game that we may lose but it’s a good game then a rent a win blowout
What’s a guaranteed 9-3 instead of a tougher schedule 8-4 difference anyway .
You want the fans to pay for the players give them a product worth watching instead of a bunch of shittey blowouts against non competitive teams .

Does anyone in the SEC besides us have a B1G rival (Indiana?)
If we don't play the Hoosiers I could give fvck all about playing any of the rest of those boring arse teams.

First time this happens: Bama gets Rutgers, Texas gets Purdue. Georgia get Illinois. LSU will have to travel to tOSU (wouldn’t hate that btw).

I think if they do this, it’s gonna be tiered. There ain’t gonna be LSU-Rutgers, it will be LSU-Michigan and Mississippi State-Rutgers

SEC should play 10 conference games. Everyone plays a cupcake week 1. You can play your other OOC game week 2 or if you have a big in state rival like Georgia and Florida you can play your second OOC game the last week of the season. Everyone plays 10 SEC games in a row one way or the other.

I’d much rather play other teams in my conference more often than an SEC/Big 10 challenge. This isn’t college basketball.

Exactly. Give me another SEC game. I don't want to possibly drop the Louisville game for some game with Minnesota or Iowa.

My take home from this is the network deal won't be upgraded if the SEC plays nine conference games instead of eight.
