I was alive when he had arguably the greatest basketball team of the tourney era (1975). So, yeah, I'm aware of Knight's shortcomings as a person.

However, I don't think it's unreasonable to look at his treatment by the press and this author with a certain level of skepticism. Especially when you contrast it with how another known "a-hole", John Thompson at Georgetown (among others), was handled by the press.

Riddle me this: how would Knight have been treated if he had publicly declared, "I won't recruit a black player to Indiana"? Now, look at deafening silence over Thompson's declaration regarding white players.

Even Knight's harshest critics admit he ran a clean program in the cesspool that is college basketball. I guess as long as you openly cheat your arse off while uttering hypocritical, mawkish platitudes (John Wooden, come on down!) or are openly racist in a way that appeals to white-guilt liberals in the media (Thompson) it's perfectly acceptable. Even lauded. But, Robert Montgomery Knight used harsh language! He was demanding of his players! He didn't graduate from charm school!

I've read it several times. Nowhere did I suggest it was completely fabricated. Nor do I expect the book to even border on hagiography. Go back and read (carefully) what I said. In light of how we know now the media and literary world operate, is it really out of the question to look back on the book with somewhat of a jaundiced eye?

Feinstein was always fair. If this were say Lupica or Kornheiser, I would agree with you.

But the General brought a lot of this in himself with the way he treated people and I say this as a fan of his as a coach. But let's not romanticize it, Knight was a grade-A a-hole. Great coach or not.

This is a bummer, used to watch him on that sports reporters show with Dick Schapp.

Fun fact, the Sports Reporters show has been off the air for almost 8 years now

Another fun fact, it was a ripoff of a local Chicago cable show called Sportswriters on TV. The original was a lot more entertaining.

Dude, he was a complete dickhead! One of the biggest a-holes that ever covered sports. How do you not know that?

John Thompson was a bully who wouldn't hesitate to use the race card if it could help him

It also wasn't a secret which side of the political spectrum Bobby fell. That makes him a very convenient target.

Bobby being the biggest a-hole on the planet made him a target.

I have no idea what political side he was on. I don't pay attention to that. But I saw him be a dick to reporters and other media staff for about 20 years and throw chairs across the court.

I remember watching him as a kid on SportsReporters. Him and Bill Conlin seemed like they smelled like each others assholes and drank Chianti afterwards. Self righteous douches.

Color me skeptical. Sure, Bobby was abrasive and not exactly a graduate of charm school. It also wasn't a secret which side of the political spectrum Bobby fell. That makes him a very convenient target.

Sportswriters on TV

Loved that show. Just a bunch of old newspaper guys sitting around a card table with the haze of Bill Gleason's cigar.

I enjoyed The Last Amateurs.
About the Patriot League during basketball season. No scholarships, no frills. Studying for tests on the 4 hour bus ride after a game.
Definitely going to grab a couple of his books and read.

Bob Knight helped his players get jobs. One former player with a wife and two kids was out of work and desperate. Coach Knight made some calls and the former player had three job offers the next day; good jobs with benefits.
