So let me get this straight, you hate when people make mass assumptions about a group of people, so you make mass assumptions about a group of people.

This sounds like academic nonsense, but what ever power words have over you or any one else you have given them.

I mean, we have still have name discrimination in the hiring process, even after education and other baseline measures have been controlled for.

Not really relevant to this discussion.

Words matter, and especially for marginalized communities

If you let the government decide what words are and aren't acceptable what is and isn't hate speech it will eventually be those very marginalized communities that suffer the most.

It is exactly this realization that I quit voting for the Republican Party in 2004 and vote 3rd party now.

Academic nonsense? Why the pushback against reason, facts, truths and objectively that incorporates nuance and perspective?

That's a pretty disingenuous and false statement. Individually, perhaps. Collectively? Nope.

That suggests that those running the govt have will implicitly and explicitly govern against those communities. Sounds like an indictment

Good - maybe this will extend to license plates...because the government issues them and declares them government speech and prohibits content.

What facts have you presented. I'm not even sure what weaponized speech means unless you can explain in laymans terms with specific examples, it's just academic nonsense.

Again, i really have no idea what you are saying here. If you think it is ok for the government to decide what is "offensive" then you are banking on the "right" people to be in charge. History shows us this never lasts the "other" party will eventually be in power and rules acceptable when your team is office can and will beused by them to do things you may not like.

H-Town I'm with you on this, this Strong Safety dude is really starting to obfuscate the issue by producing words and concepts that have not been supported by facts attributable to Strong Safety's research and are expressed as "academic nonsense." Very confusing.

yeah H-Town isn't a "big government" guy so that is certainly an indictment of our "big government"

the question, again, is why you want to make it bigger, especially knowing that the groups hurt the worst by government expansion are those you claim to support

Sex, drugs and rock n' roll - alcohol - all legislated or banned at one point.

This country have never gotten over the fact that it was founded by Puritans. We still cling to that Plymouth Rock.

By today's standards, our forefathers would be considered crazy fringe fanatics and Janet Reno would firebomb the village.

But back to free speech - this is a country that wanted to ban heavy metal and rap music in the 80's - on obscenity charges...when obscenity charges wouldn't stick - Tipper Gore went to heavy metal induces suicide.

This country has a long history in believing that words are a weapon to be moderated, monitored and controlled.

Like the Puritans believed, words are dangerous...thou not speaketh such blasphemy!

Military is an obvious exception because one of the primary roles of government is to defend and protect us from outside forces. The lefts main problem is that they don't understand the role of government.

Derealing the thread I realize, but We spend more than the next 8-10 countries combined on defense. At some point when you are a hammer every problem looks like a nail. Scaling back on "defense" will not leave us defenseless
