I was thinking more along the lines of the LSU team that waxed Ohio State against the Georgia team that basically ended Hawaii's football program.

That Hawaii team was one of the biggest frauds I had ever witnessed. When Boise played Oklahoma, when Utah played Bama, etc, I always thought the little guys had a shot. Because they were dominant during the season and actually had dudes that could hold their own in the trenches. That Hawaii team barely won against almost every sorry team they played that year.

I do feel bad for Colt Brennan though. If I recall he lit it up during NFL preseason and no one every gave him an actual shot. Think the coach said "durr he scores too fast" as a legit reason for not playing him. His wikipedia page is a very depressing read if you ever get the chance. Every stop was more sad than the last once he left Hawaii

Florida started it in 06 and then UGA and LSU set it in stone in 07 that the SEC was operating at a different level than the rest of the country at that point.

1996 Ohio State. That Rose Bowl was so epic.

Colt Brennan and Hawaii got what they deserved.

They asked for it.

One of the few times that UGA didn't choke.

I remember reading a write-up about that game beforehand that said "Hawaii needed everything in the bag to comeback against a 4-8 Washington team and win by 7. Georgia beat Florida by 12."

That was one of a very few Georgia game I ever watched where I didn't really feel nervous before the game. It was such a colossal mismatch of talent that it was never going to be close.

That really was an incredible game and an incredible team. The talent that John Cooper pissed away in Columbus without winning a national title in 1996 and 1998 was criminal. Those teams were absolutely stacked.

Such an awesome game (if you're a dawg fan) and part of what solidified this era of SEC dominance

No offense but it was Hawaii dude. I mean Hawaii beat Louisiana Tech by 1 point in OT that year. And San Jose State by a TD in OT. And Nevada by 2 points and Fresno State by a TD.

How'd that SEC dominance go against Utah with Alabama? A Mountain West team.

Sounds like the committee got it right.

Horrible logical leap.

We have no way of ever knowing if TCU could have done the same.

I'll add 2008 USC to the mix. I'll never forget it, it was a Thursday night, I was a student at LSU eating at the 459 and on TV I literally saw Mark May on Sportscenter say that USC would beat the Rams if they played. That very Thursday, USC lost to Oregon State in the emergence of the Rodgers Brothers. But the rest of that season USC put on a defensive clinic I don't think we'll ever see in modern football again. Only 2 teams in the regular season scored more than 10 points against them (including the OSU loss). 8 games they gave up single digits. 3 shutouts, 3 games only holding the opponent to 3 points.

An older team than most mentioned here, but 1975 Texas A&M deserves on this list. 10-0 and ranked #2 going into the last game of the season. Just came off a win against #5 Texas and the defense was giving up 7 ppg thru the first 10 games. That defense was seriously nasty, Lester Hayes is the name most would recognize.

Starting QB got hurt during the Texas game, and had to take a backup to the hills of Arkansas for the last game of the season (which had been moved for TV). A&M lost something like 5 or 6 fumbles in the game and lost 31-6.

Had they won the game, they'd have played UGA in the Cotton Bowl for a chance to win the MNC (Ohio St was #1 and lost the Rose Bowl).

I wasn't born at the time, but this game still haunts my Dad, who was a teenager at the time.

Hawaii was hyped as frick going into that game and Colt Brennan has Heisman hype throughout the season.

In hindsight, sure. But at the time people around the country believed in Hawaii. Media members didn’t outright dismiss the idea that Hawaii earned a shot at a national title.

Then the 3rd place SEC team walked in and had people people feeling sorry for Hawaii that they were so totally overmatched and how they got the crap beat out of them for 60 minutes.

Nebraska leap-frogged PSU because that Huckster Tom Osborne lied to the Press and said he was going to retire after the year...and he had never won the National Title.

Well lo and behold, he comes back for 1995 and 1996.

The Press thought it was a farewell parting gift in 1994.

To be fair, Nebraska has the most #1 votes to start the season, and they ultimately ran away with the AP votes in the end. Farewell gift or not, that team was also really good and well respected.

‘01 Florida was probably spurrier’s second best team.

Nobody has mentioned ‘97 Florida state yet. They were at the top of the rankings all year with Michigan and Nebraska and then lost by 3 in the swamp in one of the best games I’ve ever seen. They then smoked Ohio state in the sugar or fiesta. That FSU team was stacked and would have clobbered Michigan.

I mean that's media for you. At bowl selection they were undefeated and 2 loss LSU got in over them so yeah some people cried foul about it. But theres a reason they weren't put in the title game, because anyone who watched them play that year knew they werent championship material. As I alluded to earlier UGA was playing probably the best of any team in the country by the end of that season. Their slow start including getting curbstomped by Tennessee early in the season kept them out but I was relieved as an LSU fan we got to play Tenn instead of UGA. When I saw UGA was gonna face Hawaii, I knew that shite was gonna be a bloodbath as soon as it was announced. Hawaii had no line to speak of. Now Brennan as an individual, I thought he was actually really good, but there was no way his receivers were gonna get separation and no way his line was gonna hold up. They could barely hold their own against their sorry schedule. Seriously, there were FCS teams that had a higher SoS that year and Hawaii needed miracles and heroics to beat many of their opponents.

1973 Ohio State. Only a tie against number 4 Michigan stopped them from winning a title. They demolished USC in the Rose Bowl who said they were by far the best team they played that year which included ND which beat Bama for a national title.

94 Penn State for reasons already listed.

96 Ohio State the team that made me fall in love with football. Dominated the first half against Michigan but couldn't punch the ball in the end zone. Shawn Spring slips and Tai Streets taked a slant like 75 yards for a TD. Went on to beat another team who deserves to be on here ASU. A team that did the impossible and that's shut out Nebraska that year in the middle of their abusrd run of 3 titles in 4 years.

2011 LSU. Rematch never should have happend. They should have played another pick Oklahoma State that year.

Baylor also put almost 800 yards of offense on TCU that year. The game was close but Baylor was the better team.

Eh, theres a reason the Big 12 was hesitant to name Baylor the outright champion. Even after that game many thought TCU was the better team. TCU had a 3 TD lead in the 4th and two controversial PI calls (one a call, one a no call both in Baylor's favor) pushed the game over the edge. TCU controlled that game for the majority of it. And outside of that game TCU looked like the much better team and also played a better OOC schedule. But the Big 12 also knew they couldnt name TCU the champ because of that game so they pussyfooted around and promoted them both as co-champs.

But I fully believe TCU could have made a serious run that year. But idk if I'd call Baylor the better team. 2011 Bama was better than LSU even though LSU won the regular season match. Difference is Bama got a 2nd chance to prove it, TCU didnt
