I think 2006 LSU should be mentioned too. I kinda wanted to be unbiased but they had 4 first rounders in the subsequent draft (yeah I know Russell was a bust). But they ended the season playing some of the hottest football in the league (much like UGA in 07, speaking of forgotten teams).

2006 LSU was better than 2007 LSU. That team was rolling at the end of the year. It would have been interesting to see what happened if Russell didn't fumble at the goal line early in the Florida game that year.

I love threads like these. It's always interesting to see the responses. Another interesting one is 2003 Oklahoma. Through their first 11 games, they looked like the best team to ever step on a college football field. In their last two, they looked very average. They didn't play a great schedule but the team that beat Texas 65-13 and Oklahoma State 52-9 was not the same team we saw against Kansas State and LSU.

They had scored a TD on the previous play but it was overturned with review.
They also got shafted @ Auburn that year.

Also 2005 WVU that beat UGA in the Sugar Bowl was really good too.

2005 USC and Texas being THAT damn good really overshadowed a lot of other really good teams that year actually. LSU basically played the whole season without a bye week with a new coach and won the West, and just tired out by the SEC CG (no disrespect to UGA, they beat the shite out of is that game). But they put a whopping on Miami in the bowl.

Thankful LSU avoided them in the SECCG. I thibk full strength lsu beats uga, but LSU was fielding a MASH unit against Tenn in that championship game. UGA would have feasted.

2007 UGA vs LSU would have been an epic SECCG. The spark that Knowshon Moreno provided that team midseason was unreal.

Jacob Hester scored before that but officials were blind. The sad thing is Chris Leak played like straight arse that game, Tebow made 3 good plays, we fumbled a kickoff at the endzone, and Russell turned it over a lot. I'm rarely one to make the excuse "we beat ourselves" but that's one that I wish we could have replayed for sure.

Pat White and Noel Devine

I thought Devine started right after white and slaton left
White and slaton was so much fun though. I hate that Pitt beat them that one year

It's insane though that they'd drop after beating an eventual top 10 Ohio St by 49 points.

Colorado's #1 votes had to go to someone.

White and Slaton were juniors and Devine was a freshman in 2007.

A full strength LSU, sure.

The LSU that was available for the SECCG would have gotten worked by UGA. I want to say like 4 or 5 starters were put on both sides of the ball including our starting qb.

If only Penn State had waited until 95 to join the Big 10 instead of in 93. Would've been an epic Orange Bowl 1 vs 2.

TCU was ranked higher going into the last week of the season than baylor was. That is/was retarded.

Baylor beat K State I think the last week of the season and that made the resumes even. K State was a decent team and the quality wins then became the same. I had zero problem with it. By the time the schedules were the same, they put the team with the H2H win higher.

Speaking of 2006 though, whatever happened to Mitch Mustain? Arkansas got blasted by USC, then Mustain started from there and Arkansas went undefeated. Then inexplicably Casey Dick starts the last few games and they ended on a 3 game losing streak.

Mustain transferred to USC (dunno why he didnt just go somewhere hed start right away) and I never heard from him again.

I was thinking more along the lines of the LSU team that waxed Ohio State against the Georgia team that basically ended Hawaii's football program.

Baylor also put almost 800 yards of offense on TCU that year. The game was close but Baylor was the better team.

#3 Nebraska beat #2 Colorado by 17 that same week. Nebraska has the 2nd most first place votes going into that week too.

It's insane though that they'd drop after beating an eventual top 10 Ohio St by 49 points

quote:

Penn State entered the seventh game of the season 6-0 and in first place in the national polls. It had a critical home game with No. 21 Ohio State. The Lions took care of business on that day, defeating the Buckeyes 63-14 in front of what was at the time a capacity crowd of 97,079 fans inside of Beaver Stadium. On the same day Nebraska, ranked third, defeated No. 2 Colorado 24-7. The win for Nebraska was sufficient in the polls to leapfrog the Lions and for the remainder of the season the teams held the top two spots, with the Cornhuskers No. 1 and Penn State No. 2.

It was an era where an unwritten rule existed that if a team held the top spot heading into the final bowl game, and won, it would hold on to the top position. There was little to no hope for the Lions were Nebraska to win the Orange Bowl.

In fact in the Ohio State game, the press accused Paterno of running up the score and he said, hey I had third stringers in there after the half!

Nebraska leap-frogged PSU because that Huckster Tom Osborne lied to the Press and said he was going to retire after the year...and he had never won the National Title.

Well lo and behold, he comes back for 1995 and 1996.

The Press thought it was a farewell parting gift in 1994.

No way 1994 Nebraska beats 1994 PSU. No way.

And the only reason Colorado was ranked #2 was because of a miracle Hail Mary by Kordell Stewart.

Dude I still have memories of Bob Stoops' halftime speech against LSU. Dude was incoherently pissed. I've never seen him like that before nor after that, but he was in super rare form for that interview. "WE'RE THE HIGHEST SCORING TEAM EVER AND WE NEED TO PLAY LIKE IT".

Wish I could find video of it.

Such an awesome game (if you're a dawg fan) and part of what solidified this era of SEC dominance. Everyone was sucking Hawaii's dick like maybe they should get a shot at the NC and then UGA strolls in and ends their lives for the world to see.

I have never seen a QB take a beating like Colt Brennan took in that game. I almost felt bad for him.

I hate Auburn...but 2004 Barn had a sick resume and pretty much got screwed.
