Really the only national championship team that matters is the 2019 LSU team. The rest are just footnotes in history

Only rating the perfect seasons. Only vaguely remember most of these teams.

1. 71 Nebraska
2. 76 Pitt
3. 79 Alabama
4. 74 Oklahoma
5. 73 Notre Dame

I love how a 10-1-1 USC got to split a national championship with Switzer's best perfect OU team in 1974. Kinda helps you understand 03.

not really... it was the opposite situation. The AP overwhelmingly chose Oklahoma (51 votes to USCs 6) as the best team in the nation, but they were on a postseason proabtion.

The Coaches Poll is not allowed to vote for teams on probation so had to award the title to USC.

OU was on probation in '74. They shouldn't have been allowed to win it at all.

If we're talking talent and future NFL players you gotta go with the '72 USC team.

They also rolled through their schedule.

NCAA

Wrong...Ohio State also had a share of the 1970 National Title. NCAA database confirms that.

I love how Alabama got to split a national championship with USC in 1978 even though USC beat them 24-14 at Legion Field.

Does disregarding Alabama's head to head regular season losses sound familiar to LSU fans?

Alabama may have lost to USC but I feel voters were impressed with the schedule they played that year. Alabama opened the 1978 season with three teams ranked in the preseason AP Top 10. They beat two of them (Nebraska and Missouri) but lost to the third and final one (USC). They also played two other OOC opponents that season that weren't ranked (Washington and Virginia Tech). They defeated a Top 10 LSU team convincingly before beating #1 Penn State in the Sugar Bowl to end the year. The Trojans may have beat Alabama but their schedule was nowhere near as tough and they lost to an unranked Arizona State team by two touchdowns.

My biggest problem isn’t the probation itself, but they were ineligible for a bowl game. They were dominant, but their schedule was also very easy that year. The only good teams they played were Texas and Nebraska, and ‘74 was a down year for both programs.

They blew out a bunch of bad teams, played much closer games against the only two good teams, and avoided their biggest test because they didn’t play in a bowl.

OU’s 78-79 seasons might have been better than their 74-75 title runs.

1971; Nebraska

This team beat an undefeated Bama 38-7.
Also beat Oklahoma in the game of the decade.
Also Colorado was really good.

ASU went 9-3 that year. Not exactly a bad loss at Tempe while Bama lost at home.

Just a foreign idea to me. Two teams with the same record and they went head to head and one team claims the title over the team they lost to. So who cares about schedule ranking which is again based on voters ranking those teams...the teams went head to head...so we know which team was better...that's the best objective barometer you can get.

But the poll system was always regional and there were less voters on the West Coast.

Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Colorado finished 1-2-3 in the polls that year. Nebraska was undefeated, Oklahoma's only loss was to Nebraska, and Colorado's only two losses were to Nebraska and Oklahoma.

Sounds like the Big8 was getting the SEC treatment back then from the pollsters. Incestuous rankings.

Iowa St. finished fourth, and only lost 3 games in the regular season. Nebraska, Oklahoma, Colorado.

That earned them their first ever bowl invitation, where they lost to LSU.

Colorado beat a Top 10 LSU team to open the season that started their climb up the polls.
