All good. Your point still stands. It’s a better deal than Houston’s. Can’t tell these folk that tho

Yea there’s still value in that

He needs to not suck at a position he's been playing now for almost a decade, it's not that hard.

Problem is, Rafael Devers is a terrible 3rd baseman while Alex Bregman just won a gold glove.
Wasn’t Bregman our shortstop?

Im an LSU and Astros fan that has every reason to see Bregman succeed
Boras got it done for him. It took some reckless management from the Red Sox to make it happen IMO
Astros offer was more than fair, and no knowledgeable Astros fan wouldn’t have some reservation had he accepted it.
Bregman spent last season playing for this contract. Dead pull hitting with walk rate down. He went to Boston for the Green Monster. He can be a professional hitter to all fields and a team player.
Or he may concentrate on power and his next contract. Who knows? But I am sure he will punish Astros pitching. LOL

He’s also lead the AL in Errors by a 3rd basemen since 2019
in 2018 he was 2nd in the AL in 56 games.
He lead all 3rd basemen in errors in 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2023
He lead the AL In errors in 2023 and MLB in errors in 2020
dude is really a bad 3rd basemen.

Like everyone knows it but him. It's not just a situation where he's adequate at 3rd but they just went out and got someone a little better and he doesn't think he should give it up.
Bro you are the worst defensive infielder, not just third baseman. You're the worst defensive infielder in baseball. You've got no legitimate claim to continue playing 3rd base when the team has acquired a gold glove 3rd baseman.

Devers is definitely not interested in public relations or putting his team in the best position to win here.
But as management, when you have a guy signed like him, it would seem prudent to discuss prior to overpaying for a player that plays his position.
I mean, I watched Bregman play for Bregman all season. There wasn't a ball he couldn't attempt to pull to LF, and his normal QABs went out the window. I could catch MLBN highlights every night and enjoy individual accomplishments. I watch games to invest in a team.
It's become much more difficult to enjoy a team's accomplishments in today's game.

Was it really that bad/obvious?

Alex Cora said Chaim Bloom was in charge when the Red Sox told Rafael Devers he would be the third baseman longterm.
shite, that is the guy who is supposed to save the Cardinals.

It was pretty bad and it lasted for about two months. Bregman is a notoriously slow starter but this was extreme even by his standards
May and after he was pretty damn good. It will be interesting to see what comes of this, I am guessing Bregman plays a lot more 2B and they keep Kristian Campbell down. I don’t think Bregman has the requisite athleticism to play middle infield at an average level anymore but we will see.
If Devers is so obsessed with playing 3B you’d think he would get in better shape and work more at it

For those that watch every AB, yes
But you can pull up his spray chart and season numbers and easily see it too.
Even with making a run to get his HRs up, his OPS was down. Walks down. K's up. Almost no effort to go away. He doesn't possess middle away power at all.
He will never be the guy that the juiced ball gave you in '18-'19, but he can work an AB with the best of them if it is in HIS best interests. Was hoping a final contract would give us that, but looks like he may be inclined to play for another one.

I mean… it was widely reported the Astros offer was 156 and that they increased it slightly. Also, the Tigers offered more than that.
So I guess the answer to your question is baseball writers.

Uhh you left out the part where one takes 6 years to acquire & the other takes 3
Actually it takes way more than 3, which you already know. That matters.
Everyone understands he got the higher AAV on paper, but if he doesn’t perform and cash in again it’s really not so great.
It’s really all a matter of opinion, but one thing for certain is this definitely is not the deal he was looking for. He overvalued himself.

Agreed. But he still had a better deal than Astros deal from both the cubs & tigers and still chose Boston. So he’s still betting on himself I guess. Sorta seems like these guys value opt outs as much as cash. Idk if Detroit counts. You’d have to give me an extra 10 in AAV to go there lol

Come over to the Dark Side Rafael!! 3rd base is open in the Bronx.

The Tigers deal was the Astros deal with an increase for taxes in MI versus none in TX
I don't think the Cubs ever came close to either when including the tax increase
The Cubs probably handled their business better than the Red Sox. A one year deal with Turner while giving the heir apparent a season to get ready.
The Red Sox overpaid, deferred or not, and now seem to have upset their best bat.
