Especially heavyweights. There was a pretty long period imo of boring top heavyweights and that hurt the sport
Yeah, Klitschko reign was what? 12 years? Or something like that? haha

I've always wondered if boxing is much more popular up North? Where I am I know of one person that watches boxing, almost everyone else I know follows at least a little bit of UFC.

Networks had fights on a couple of weekends a month in the 80s. You were introduced to new fighters that way.

I'm not going to buy a PPV to watch 1 fight. The only fight I ever even have remote interest in is the main event in boxing. I hold the UFC to the same standard, but 9 times out of 10 I'm interested in at least 4 of the PPV bouts.
You might end up catching an all out war between no names on a prelim in the UFC. I don't remember the last time someone called a boxing match a war.

If it’s no names, did it even really happen?

UFC is today's generations preference as for as fighting goes, but boxing will still pull in big audiences with pay per view for big fights like Crawford-Spence Jr. Boxing still has big names that will pull in the money like a Tank Davis, Shakur Stevenson, the 2 fighters I just mentioned, and Canelo Alvarez. The Haney vs Lomachenko fight brought in a nice lil audience, and you still got Mr. Bomb squad (I forget his name) and Tyson Fury in the heavyweight division. As long as you have big names who can really fight in boxing it'll be popular. But overall, I'd say the UFC has taken the title of being the more popular sport. The UFC may be a trashy sport like people are sayin, but it's trashy shite that people apparently prefer today.

boxing is still far more popular than MMA both in the united states and globally. it doesn't seem that way because the UFC's excellent marketing. but boxing will always be king of the combat sports.

Definitely true with UFC. Normally there will be a helluva brawl in the prelims but also some duds. My thing about your point though is that when was the last time you looked up what happened or a bigger main event to see if there was a war? Most on here obviously aren't watching the fights so have no idea when there is a war. Which happens quite often btw.

and my personal favorite - Prince Naseem
Prince was one of the most entertaining guys to watch. Not quite an elite fighter, but very, very good.

One of the issues that helped kill boxing (and there are many) is the feminizing of the Olympics. When I was a kid, boxing was one of the main sports covered during the Olympics. So we all knew who Sugar Ray Leonard was. We had been exposed to the Spinks brothers prior to them going pro. Roy Jones was a familiar talent to sports fans before he entered the pro ranks. The Olympics was a boxing minor league and marketing campaign all rolled into one.
Once NBC figured out women would flock in droves to the TV sets to watch all the drama-filled and "artistic" events like gymnastics, rhythmic dancing, diving, etc. it was goodbye, boxing. There aren't a dozen average sports fans who could tell you the last American to win a gold medal in boxing.

His opposition for the most part was mediocre. We saw why he avoided Morales etc when he fought Barrera and lost about every round.

who says they are underpaid anyway? which organization is paying mma talent more than the ufc is? take a look at some of the names that have been making big money and see how often they have been fighting.
They don’t know. They just regurgitate talking points because they have no clue what they’re talking about

Derrick Lewis would get his face smashed in if he had to fight a top heavyweight boxer.
And Patrick Mahomes would go 0-5 off of MLB pitching, what’s your point??

It also doesn’t help that boxing doesn’t build anything. There is next to no infrastructure in that “business”.
The two guys in the main event make about 80% of the PPV revenue and the rest goes to the undercard and other promoters/agents.
So sure.. the handful of top guys in boxing are making generational wealth, but the other 99% are making less than what the UFC pays their prelims fighters.

Boxing is weird as well with people having 5 belts at a time
This. UFC is one organization with one belt per fewer weight classes to keep track of.
"Boxing" is 10 belts across 10 different organizations with twice the weight classes. It's much more difficult to keep track of and follow stars.

Plus, the top boxers RARELY want to fight other too boxers
There might be 2-3 interesting fights per year.. MAYBE
