fricking drives me crazy.

In general, you're supposed to Ben looking someone in the eye when you speak to them. When your an instructor and they are straight out starting off into space not paying attention....

It absolutely drives me insane

Tell you the truth, that kind of irks me when I see it also.

Lots of kids grow up believing that they’re equals with adults. It’s a shame.

I don’t think you looked in the eyes of any of your spelling teachers.

If the coach looks at me like that again, I’ll only play four games and then ditch his arse.

Some people can't make eye contact and process what they're hearing at the same time. It seems insulting, but I've started off into space many times and still been locked in to what someone was telling me. It looks bad on camera, but unless they have their back turned, it's probably nothing

From a coaching standpoint.... depends on the situation

Sometimes you come up on the side and are talking to a kid in their ear or as an aside, not to be seen and heard by everyone else, they not looking you in the eye then is expected.

Directly teaching/instructing/correcting/coaching? Eye contact should be made for sure

Can't really blame them when those same coaches are yelling at them to half the time.

"Look at me when I'm talking to you, or I'll pull your scholarship."

That should do the trick

They never look at reporters either. Ever notice that? They’ll do a whole interview on the field and never once look at the person asking them questions.

And I don’t care about that by the way... just a neutral observation.

That’s way too broad of a generalization to make. What if the kid just made a mistake, like a fumble or INT, and the coach is in their face yelling. Obviously the kid knows he screwed up, I don’t blame him for not looking at the coach in the eyes while getting yelled at. On the other hand, if the player just got a dumb unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, he better be looking the coach in the eyes for his arse chewing.
