re: People who watch MLB. How did you choose your favorite team?

When I was a kid, I chose a few favorite players based on who I liked ans baseball cards I collected. I then started using that team when playing RBI baseball and other video games as I got older. It just stuck. I didn't grow up with a local team. Everyone in Alabama likes the braves and I didn't want to be like everyone else.
ETA: I find artificially selecting a favorite team as an adult to be difficult. I have tried to do it with the NFL, but I am basically apathetic about it.

My older brother was a big Nomar/red sox fan when I was just getting into middle school. I followed along in his footsteps I guess. The 2004 run came along while I was in high school so obviously that didn't hurt either.
Being from Louisiana, I tried rooting for the Astros but could never really get into it. Though I did enjoy going to the astrodome for games.

My godfather bought me a hat and jacket at Fenway the year I was born. (My aunt has family in Boston) he gave me the hat when I was about 5 and I wore it out, the jacket didn't fit til middle school.
Ever since then I've had a B on my forehead about 97.58% of the time, not counting sleep.
Made my first trip to Fenway last year and fell in love with the city of Boston. I WILL live there one day.

Astros were the first MLB team I saw live. Though over the years I probably went to more Rangers games though I never really latched onto them. I'm more impartial to them than anything. I never picked up long term on an AL team. In the late 80's I was a Canseco fan so I had some A's gear. After that I was a Frank Thomas fan so I had a few White Sox shirts. I've got a Mariners shirt because I visited SafeCo last year and thought it was a nice shirt. Plus I had beer spilled on me so I needed a dry shirt.

dude, anybody but the Redsox. you don't want to be yet another douche from Louisiana who buys a Boston hat and claims to have some distant connection to the team. we had enough of that bandwagon shite in 2004.

He couldn't even spell the team name right either. At least if I spell my team as "Asstros" it's applicable.

Cards- I'm from Missouri and my whole family are Cards fans. My great grandfather used to take the train to old Sportsman Park to watch games and the tradition has carried through the family ever since.

I didnt read this whole thread, but I was in your situation at the beginning of this season. First I'd choose which league you wanna be a fan of. I chose the NL, so that cuts it in half. I then looked at the teams, who their players were, how they play, their fans, etc. Only problem I have with the brewers at this point is it can be hard to catch games, but I watch when I can and watch highlights, look at box scores, etc

grew up largely in STL so I went to the games because of the straight A ticket promotions they had... and frankly because loving the Cardinals is a near obligatory part of growing up in STL
Later on I got to be an usher at Busch Stadium... that is a heck of a fun job for a high school kid

The Cubs always seemed to be on WGN when i was a kid and i mustve picked some lucky games to watch because they always seemed to win. It also helped that i didnt want to be a Braves fan because everyone else i knew was a fan

There is no other team! Cept the Saints!

I said I Didn't want to be a bandwagoner... Besides, I don't want to be mistaken for a jay-z or Fred durst fan.

Braves fan, mainly because they played on TBS I guess. I've never really thought about it I just remember always liking the Bravos.

I agree with this.
I too grew up in Louisiana and didn't ever pick a favorite team. My dad has been a Cardinals fan since his childhood but living in Louisiana, I never became a St. Louis fan.
I moved to Dallas in 1984 and by 1986 was at every Rangers game.

times are tough but make you appreciate the great moments that much more
I stuck with the Rangers from 1986 and they rewarded me with playoff series in 1996 & 1997 and an AL Pennant in 2010.
They are my hometown team for the last 25 years and I love them now just like I did in 86 when Bobby Valentine brought in Inky, Jose Guzman, Edwin Correa & Mitch Williams.
If there isn't a team close to you pulling for the Stros and going to games while visiting relatives there would be a great idea.
