There is no correlation between recruiting rankings and success

Let's ask AI...
quote:
The average four-year recruiting rank for college football champions is consistently high, with many analyses showing averages within the top 10 nationally. A 2025 analysis found the average four-year recruiting rank for national champions over a 20-year period was 5.9, and 16 of the 20 champions had an average four-year rank of 7.8 or better.
Another study notes that all five national champions in the College Football Playoff era had a top-10 recruiting class for the season they won the title.
Key findings on champion recruiting
Consistently top-tier: Champions consistently recruit at an elite level, with most having a top-10 average over a four-year period.
Four-year average: A deep dive into 20 national champions found their average four-year recruiting rank was 5.9, with 16 teams averaging better than 7.8.
Playoff era trend: Every national champion since the inception of the College Football Playoff has had a top-10 recruiting class in the season they won.
Strong depth: Elite recruiting provides the depth needed for a long season and greater competition in practice.
Blue-chip ratio: Another metric, the blue-chip ratio (the percentage of four- and five-star recruits), is also consistently high for champions, with some analyses finding champions have had a blue-chip ratio above 50%.
Talent is crucial: While development is important, elite recruiting is the foundation. Without a high number of top recruits, it is extremely difficult to win a national title, even with excellent coaching.

Y'all been to an SEC championship game yet?

They will rue the day they fired James Franklin 10 months removed from a semi-final appearance.
This was their Solich moment. Like Nebraska, Penn State will never be the top program they were before they shite-canned Franklin . And like Nebraska, their hubris is the reason.

PSU cult didn’t realize A&M and BYU cults could beat them in a bidding war.

Firing Franklin with absolutely no plan was insanely stupid. Knee jerk reaction

Pat Kraft completely mishandled this. It may end up costing him his job. My guess is they end up with an NFL coordinator. There’s no college coach left that’s worth it.

I think what you mean to say is recruiting rankings don't guarantee success. You would be correct. However, saying that there is no correlation is wrong. Let's take the current top 10 and just compare them to where they were ranked for the last 4 recruiting classes going backwards from 2025 and ending in 2022, per 247:
Ohio State - 4, 5, 5, 4
Indiana - not in top 25, not in top 25, not in top 25, 25
Georgia - 2, 1, 2, 3
Oregon - 5, 3, 8, 13
Texas Tech - not in top 25, 24, not ranked in top 25, not in top 25
Ole Miss - 16, 21, not ranked in top 25, not in top 25
Texas A&M - 9, 19, 15, 1
Oklahoma - 17, 8, 4, 8
Notre Dame - 12, 9, 10, 7
Alabama - 3, 2, 1, 2
So as you can see, of the top 10, only 3 of the teams had any seasons not ranked in the top 25. Georgia, Alabama and Ohio State had top 10 rankings every single year and of the 10, 7 were ranked in the top 25 every single year with all 7 being ranked in the top 20 every single year. Of course there will be outliers, I am thinking of LSU and Texas, who have consistently great recruiting classes but don't have near the success those classes would indicate. While it is not an exact, all the time correlation, this is a good indication of why teams like Georgia, Alabama, Notre Dame, OSU and Oregon are consistently in the top 10-15 every single year.

lol...
Weren't they #2 at one point this season?
Now a recruiting class one spot below Harvard?
Yikes...

Yeah that's why since 247 started tracking talent composite in 2015 every national champion ranked top 14
