Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs

He turns 31 in two days. Not that I am recommending he be traded but at what point do the Chiefs draft a high-profile QB to be groomed for his replacement? Or do they look at the FA route?

Would guess Andy Reid will retire with Mahomes. I'm sure he doesn't care about his replacement. Would think they will go all in on to win another super bowl.

They could draft Chambliss but he's only a few months younger than Mahomes.

Getting Walker and keeping the D up to par is the best way to preserve an aging QB. Not everyone plays to 40 and Mahomes is obviously declining but with a run game and D you can get him to the spots where he can continue to win games for you. Chiefs have done exactly what you should in their situation.

I agree. The caveat here is can Walker carry that kind of load all season. He hadn't done it to date in Seattle. Last season, Charbonnet carried about 40-45% of the touches until he was injured in the final game of the regular season. They should be careful about running Walker into the ground.

He’s a guy who’s at the breaking point age and my guess is they’ll try to get every last drop from him this season. They also have a rookie behind him who’ll provide the fresh legs and maybe a game or two worth of relief.

He's only 25. Maybe can be a bell-cow guy, but he hasn't seen that load yet.
Since he was drafted, his max touches in a season is 255, and he's averaged about 16 touches a game. He had 26 last night. The Seahawks leaned on him in the playoffs, though.
Ultimately, think splitting his carries is the right approach, and your last sentence is the way they need to go.

Yes but he’s in what year 5-6? For the norm he’s reaching the peak 1-2 years then the drop off.

I think he looks older slower and injury prone already. Maybe he recaptures his magic but the thing that made him so difficult in the past was his absurd playmaking from his athleticism. He did scramble a few times last night but looked much slower than years past.

Starting year 5 this season.
Maybe a drop off is coming in 1-2 years, but the immediate concern is he's never been the guy to get 20-25 touches a game. I think the Chiefs need to be cautious.

If Mahomes gets a dependable big time true #1 receiver and somehow becomes more of a drift in the pocket, quick read QB, vs a quick read and and scramble type QB he could easily play at a high level until his late 30's.

Hinging the season on a RB carrying the ball 20+ times a game is bold. He'll get hurt at some point.

I think the plan is to have rookie Emmett Johnson fill that role. He was pretty decent in preseason and he looked good last night.
