Bally Sports going bankrupt had a lot to do with it. I presume whatever channel picked up their games paid nowhere close to what they were getting.

MLB picked up their broadcasting deal and paid them 80% of what their Bally's deal would've paid.

Looks like MLB took over D-backs games from Bally's in July and has pledged the same deal to them and other impacted clubs in the future, not as a permanent arrangement though.

It will be interesting to see what happens down the road then. How close would airing the games on local networks close the gap?

When was the last time a MLB franchise sold at anything approaching a loss over purchase price. I don't believe it has happened since the advent of television broadcast rights.
