LHSAA Penalizes Opelousas Football--Article on BY-U Sports

quote:

The Louisiana High School Athletic Association has penalized the Opelousas High School football team, penalties which will result in the forfeiture of the school’s 2023 Division II Non-Select State Championship.

The kids on the field will forever hold the memory of winning a State Championship so I'm sure they aren't totally devastated. But it still sucks. How are they not catching this stuff beforehand?

This really sucks for a very good Ceclia team as well. If this had been caught in November they would have a ring.

im curious what these "registration issues" are that the coach is being punished. Sounds like that would be more of a frick up on the schools part no?

We can all LOL at the Vandy girls for getting popped. Holier than thou “we don’t recruit” attitude. Can’t even buy championships.

LHSAA won't really investigate until someone brings them the info.

Not sure in this case but usually

Parents giving fake addresses, not bonafide moves, kid moves into zone but not with who has custody of them,

It could be anything. I've even seen where schools flat out didn't put a kid's name into the system because they knew the kid would be ruled ineligible.

I'm not saying that is what happened here, but I've seen it. If the registration folder isn't on file, then it doesn't get flagged. The kid plays and the opponents are none the wiser.

They would’ve played the #1 seed North Desoto in the Dome who lost to Opelousas in the semis 28-20.

Yep. Not taking anything away from Cecilia, but North Desoto probably would have shut down Diesel and Cecilia’s offense also.

Christ, again?

There was a situation several years ago where a Vandy player’s eligibility was being litigated mid-playoffs and one team didn’t know if they would be playing Vandy or the team who had lost to them until the case was decided.

LHSAA trying to remain relevant like the NCAA
In the grand scheme of things, both situations are irrelevant.
Kudos to Vandebilt for turning themselves in for a grades infraction. Most schools sweep that under the rug. No reason to not let the other kids compete.
Twenty years will pass and I'm sure we will all remember the Opelousas scandal. Who cares?

Any institution whose purpose is to keep kids OFF the field is an enemy of mine.
This is the same organization that when you call to ask for clarity on one of their rules will not give you an answer and instead say “play them and we’ll decide later”

Same organization passed a rule “accidentally” making a huge portion of Catholic school freshmen ineligible, realized the mistake, voted to correct it, but still said those kids couldn’t play this year. Cowards- all of them

Their job like every other state association is to be the keeper of the rules and enforcer of the rules.

I doubt seriously the "play them and we'll
decide later" happened during this regime

on the third, because some kids didn't switch schools based on that rule change. Never mind member principals come up with and vote on the rules.

over 20 years since the bastrop vacates and the people they beat are still pissed.

The LHSAA enforced their rules - if you want HS ball to be like the current version of college ball you need to be drug tested.

West Jeff in 1981
John Ehret in 2000
the teams that lost to bastrop in 2005, catholic 2017 through 2020, southern lab 2014 through 2016 and there have been others...
