Why? There was nothing wrong. The old rules worked well.

The main issues are the long reviews for targeting, and the frequency and length of tv timeouts. The clock rules were not the reason why the games were so long.

If they aren’t going to stop the clock for first downs until <=2 minutes why do they not have a 2 minute warning? This is worse than the NFL imo

I like the clock rules. It adds more strategy to the game. Less possessions means more chances for upsets.

Why do we need to speed up the game?

Less game time = more commercial time = more money.

Unfortunately, college and professional sports reached their zenith in the 90s and 2000s. Now it’s all about money. 5 hour pregame shows, streaming, long commercial breaks, NIL, transfers, huge coaching salaries, playoffs, dying off of bowls and tradition. Sad to watch.

I posted this on the SEC rant.

Utah UF total plays
2022: 134 total plays
2023: 118 total plays

Total combined yards
2022: 897
2023: 616

The yards are probably a factor in talent. The plays are a factor of time. The actual game play was reduced by over 10%. Was broadcast time reduced by 10%?

Not when it’s stopped just as often but longer fit TV timeouts. It’s just less football

Nah, the rule change was long overdue.

You could just go watch the NFL like all the other mouth-breathers.

People who like this rule, just don't like college football.

Actual viewing time is the same. The time "saved" is just replaced with commercials.

Florida being down two possessions with 5 minutes left the game was already over

Then they shouldn’t have played like shite for the 55 previous minutes. Florida was terrible last night. They could have played for 120 minutes with the clock not stopping after first downs and Florida wasn’t gonna win that game.

I love college football but games routinely were going 3:45 and 4 hours. No need for that. Yes, the commercial time could be cut but that’s not happening especially now that ESPN and FOX have paid a bazillion dollars to keep consolidating conferences.

And actually, they should get rid of replay review because thst bullshite of reviewing every microscopic play always drags out the game and they still get things wrong.

NFL fans actively crap on and dislike college football games and fans of college football. College football fans also watch NFL games.

These changes will not draw in the casual/NFL fans, and will only piss off the college football fans.

If you can’t definitively overturn a play in 30 seconds from a command center in Indianapolis it shouldn’t be overturned and the game should continue.

Again, I see no reason to shorten the game other than preference. It does nothing to enhance the game. I'm sure the networks love it if the metrics are proving out added revenue from commercials but it's not good for the game or fan experience IMO.

There is going to be a point were the networks keep messing around with a good thing and viewership will start to decline. These little negative things taking away from CFB will add up to a tipping point.

Good stuff. I thought I heard Chris Fowler say last night that the new clock rules will reduce the number of plays by around 5. Looks like the 5 estimate is way off already.

I guess I don’t really see why everyone is so up in arms one way or the other.

The clock used to stop for like 3-5 seconds while they moved the chains, is that really going to impact the game that much? So what like 3 mins of game time total?

Also it does stop inside of 2 mins in the 2nd and 4th quarter so it won’t kill game winning drives like some here claimed.

There were too many commercials for too long all ready in college football, so networks pushed through a rules change that is resulting in more commercials and for longer coupled with less football

Yeah it’s the commercials’ fault but instead of doing something about that let’s just frick up the actual game itself! The sole reason anyone watches or goes.

fricking idiot.
