Nike's stock is down 75% over the past 5 years

Nike's stock has completely collapsed, losing 75% in 5 years....$167 a share to $39 today. They are the 5th worst performing stock on the S&P 500 over that timeframe.
This is exceptionally bad considering the stock market as a whole is booming and at record highs. The market pressure is strongly upwards and they are still managing to collapse.
I saw that on the news today and it made me realize just how little I see Nike out in the wild vs in it's heydey. Nike used to have huge culture swag, you'd see people randomly wearing Nike branded shirts, caps, the Just Do it shite, etc.
Michael Jordan pretty much made that entire brand out of thin air, whatever they paid him wasn't near enough. Easily the most successful celebrity endorsement campaign of all time.
MJ has been gone from the public eye long enough that whatever cache he brought the brand has completely faded and nobody has any interest in overpaying for that stupid little swoosh anymore. Young kids today see it as an overpriced, dated boomer brand.

It's even more embarrassing when you realize their labor costs are basically zero.

MJ cares about his ownership in his and Denny’s 23XI NASCAR team. He attends a lot of the races.

The Jumpman brand is still going pretty strong, I think

I don’t see nearly as many people with Nike anymore.

I think they have pretty much dominated on basketball shoe market and culture/street wear. I would think the latter has faded. Not sure if basketball can carry them.

Compared to brands like Asics and Brooks, Nike sucks.

Under Armor and Lululemon are also down 75%, Puma down 60%. Adidas is down 35%. It’s not just a Nike problem. Asics, Hoka/Decker and Sketchers are up, though. There’s definitely a lot more competition than there were back in the MJ days.

They boomed during their widest times. I bought right before that. I saw its value drop in my portfolio the other day and was looking in the history for a split or spinoff or something.
Oddly enough I think Philip Morris ha basically done the opposite, pretty sure I bought those at the same time.

No cap, but ain’t no one lining up for that Asics drop.

One thing that I didn't understand is how they do so many shoes as limited releases. Yes they're more $$ but not drastically so that they'd make up for the loss of units if it were a full scale release. The people that are buying and then reselling are making the huge profits and not Nike... I'm sure there is an explanation but doesn't make sense to me

Hard to keep people enthusiastic about buying $120 tech shirts. Vuori will be next.

I have no desire to wear branded clothes anymore. Minimalist style and comfortable all day long.

They also had a peak market cap of $280Bn and dwarfed any competitor. Adidas topped out at $80bb.
Now you have challenger brands like lulu lemon and on cloud that are probably radically overvalued, worth more than Nike, whose logo is all over sport globally, worn by top athletes and brands. Investors chase growth and it is hard to grow when you’re the dominant force
After losing 75% of its value, Nike is still worth $58Bn. Adidas is worth half that.

LONG POST, but interesting read if you want to know how and why Nike cratered so quickly.
TLDR version - they abondoned specialty shops in favor of online shopping 10 yrs ago and now can't get that marketshare back. And restructured like a PE company internally, all to their detriment.
Now, all they have is hoops and urban markets.
...
DETAILED Version
They've basically lost all of their running/recreation maket share and can't get it back.
10 yrs ago, after their new CEO took over after Phil, and had the genius idea to basically abandon specialty brick and morter shops and thought all of their specialty shopping should be online. By doing this they fricked over their long established mom-and-pops/indy chains, and specialty shops. Before they had like 75% of the shelf space in those shops and no one else could make a dent because of their long established relationships.
Once they fricked over those specialty running, recreation, shops, massive amounts of shelf space was now available and smaller brands inked deals with those shops. It's no coincidence there has been an enoumrous rise of brands like Onn Cloud, Brooks, Hoka, Aisics, New Balance, etc.
Before they never had the opportunity to get their shoes in the hands of runners and common buyers. But once Nike abandoned that market, these other brands could finally flourish... And they did.
Years later, Nike fired that CEO, and tried to get back in those shops, but the inventory space was gone and it ain't coming back. The very shelves they dominated, and voluntarily gave up, are now off limits. I think they have around 15% of shelf space now and now have no innovation or reputation among runners who finally abandoned Nikes and looked at other brands which were actually superior.
Add all of that to Nike also killing all their specialty divisions (Nike Soccer, Nike Running, Nike Baseball, Nike Tennis, etc) and merged them under basically just few umbrellas. By doing so, they lost decades of specialty knowledge and market expertise and contacts and forced people out who had previously been division heads in favor or a more Private Equity, streamlined approach.
Add all that together and that's here you are today. The new Nike CEO (came in around 23 or 24)is actually an old topflight Nike engineer. And Oldschool Nike heydey guy. He knows what the company needs to go back to, and has made lots of changes internally to get back to the old Phil days, but it's too late now. He can't get that market dominance back in the foreseeable future.
A market Nike spent 45 years building evaporated in less than a decade.
Now they basically survive on Basketball and Retro/collector shoes, and Jordan's.
Recently went shoe shopping for ultra comfort running shoes and the comparable Nike was also $30-50 more than the comparable Brooks or Hoka and close to $80 more than the comparable New Balance. Not a winning strategy...

They started producing knock off AF1s. Like how the h you gonna knock off your own brand. Just lower the price.
The shoes they sell at Academy look like the Nike Pegasus -geared toward any male over 57 y/o…. Give me something I can still look cool with people.
