Who’s heading the Houston group? I’ve heard Houston pop up over the last year as a favorite for an expansion team.

Side note: I don’t live in Houston, so it’s not local gossip. National and Canadian NHL insiders are the ones floating Houston as a favorite.

We literally have a place that’s just like topgolf that just opened. We don’t need two of those things.

Honestly surprises me that Houston has never had an NHL franchise. All these years have gone by since the WHA Aeros were no more. Franchises were given to Tampa, Miami, Nashville, Atlanta, Anaheim, San Jose, Phoenix, Denver, Carolina, Columbus, Vegas, Seattle, Dallas, Minnesota, Winnipeg.

I realize some of those were relocations, and many have had major success. I just feel like with the population base alone, Houston would maybe even be at the top of any of those other areas, considering the fact that LA metro/Anaheim already had a team.

The old Rockete owner, Leslie Alexander, did not want to share the Summit (Compaq Center) nor Toyota Center with another tenant and he had the arena rights.

Back when the WHA merged with the NHL, the owner of the Aeros said if he got a certain number of season tickets (8000?), he would take them into the NHL. Houston easily cleared that number, but the bastard pulled out, leaving us high and dry.

I remember as a kid watching the Aeros in the old Sam Houston Coliseum and then in the new beautiful Summit where they had larger crowds than the Rockets on several nights during the season. The Rockets GM son was on our HS basketball team and he would get us into the Summit after our games. It would be halftime and we could sit wherever we wanted most nights for the Rockets.

Ok...someone smarter than me help out with the math...

Right now, 32 teams, 82 games....moving to 84 games with new CBA.

Current structure:

Division Schedule Total games
Within division 4 games × 5 opponents + 3 games × 2 opponents 26
Within conference, non-divisional 3 games × 8 opponents 24
Inter-conference 2 games × 16 opponents 32

Only way I see balanced divisions is 36 teams, but 4 is too much for expansion.

You go up 2 then 34 teams, to make it even one division in each conference would have to have 9 teams or go back ot the old model and have 3 divisions or 4 division of (6,6,5) or (4,4,4, 5).

Besides money for the owners no reason to expand will dilute the product but owners will cash out so o understand why it is happening

Expanding two teams at a time with the way the expansion draft is set up will be pretty impactful to teams.

Makes me even more angry the rules when Columbus came into the league.

32 teams is already too many. Should have contracted Zona while they had the chance.

@18handicap

I use to catch games once a week of so back in those days. Went to HSPVA and would have to drive 59S to Sugarland every day. So once a week I would just stay at school and practice then work my way over to the Summit. Could pay $8 for some cheap nose bleed seat and then just meander your way down to a decent seat.

Miss the Aeros

Houston and or Atlanta need teams. Houston Trash Can Beaters has a ring. Atlanta Freddie's has a ring I'm all in.
