NFLPA on schedule: 'No one wants to play an 18th game'

NEW ORLEANS -- NFL Players Association executive director Lloyd Howell Jr. pushed back against NFL commissioner Roger Goodell's recent statement that safety data favors expanding the regular season.
"Frankly, we're not sure how he's reaching that conclusion based on the data we've been given access to," Howell said during the NFLPA's annual news conference Wednesday.
Howell was asked about the NFLPA's current stance on an 18-game season two days after Goodell's state of the league news conference. Goodell said Monday that 18 regular-season games and two preseason games "might be a possibility," citing safety data that put concussions at a historically low level during the 2024 season.
Howell said players are against another regular-season expansion after expanding to 17 games in 2021.
"No one wants to play an 18th game. No one," Howell said. "Seventeen games is already, for many of the guys, too long. Seventeen games is also so lengthy that you're still dealing with injuries going into the next season. So, there are a variety of issues that hang off of the length of the season before any formal negotiations."

So how does that fit into 18 games?"
Howell said there's "more to be done" regarding the schedule and amount of travel teams are asked to do, citing multiple teams playing three games in 10 days and the Green Bay Packers flying to Brazil and back within 48 hours this season. The safety of playing surfaces was another concern he raised.

The odd number of games creating uneven records bothers me a lot. Go back to 16 games.

If anything, they should go back to 16 games and remove a playoff spot so the 2 seed gets a bye week again. Chiefs took massive advantage of all the time they had off since they locked up the 1 Seed on Christmas. That's almost a month of prep time to advance scout the teams most likely to advance on your side of the bracket, all while getting more healthy with the time off compared to everyone else who had to throw a gameplan together for wildcard weekend.

Do this, then add back the 2nd bye week, and teams only play on Thursdays if they did not have a game the preceding weekend or Monday. Still have opening night, then no Thursday night games during weeks 2-4 & 16-18

The 16 game schedule was absolutely perfect in terms of symmetry and structure as was the 6 playoff teams with 2 byes.
Go back to that.
But who are we kidding, 18 will be a temporary stopover to 19, then of course of 20 because 19 is odd.
Super Bowl will be the week before the draft at this rate.

Fold, like they always do. They swore they weren't going to allow a 17th game. Then they got their bag of money and green-lit it. Same thing will happen here.
NFLPA is the weakest of the players unions. They’ve caved and lost pretty much every negotiation since 1987 when a bunch of regulars crossed picket lines to play in replacement games.

Also the players wear helmets and aren’t as integral to the product
