Why are we rewarding the trailing team with a better opportunity to win?

I know, it's almost as if they are trying to make the game more entertaining. IMO, they should go back to the old KO rules, but that will never happen.

If you're wondering how exactly the play would be officiated, all normal rules would apply, so if a defense got called for defensive holding, the five-yard penalty would result in an automatic first down for the offense.

Terrible fricking idea.

More opportunity for terrible NFL refs to affect the outcome of games is not a good thing. I could see 50/50 balls thrown up for grabs and ref call a ticky tack PI.

Was it always like this?

when i first started watching nfl a down runner could get up again. guys were totally massacred while raising up to one knee. now if you are down they have to stop.

Pat Mahomes posted on twitter "4th and 15" and two crying laughing emojis.

I think he would be confident about it

Gives me an idea.

Do the 4th and 15th rule but you have to use your backup QB

Yeah that penalizes the team winning
What if team that scores goes on long drive and you have a tired defense
They deserve that 3 downs on offense at a minimum for recovering defense and to be able to run clock
It should be hard for losing team to catch up through an onside kick

By what year will the NFL be completely unrecognizable compared to the 1970s? 2030?

frick all of this

Even with the low success rate, onside kicks are fun as all hell

I’ve never turned a game off, when I knew an onsides kick was coming

The only good that could come from this would be the melt from the first fanbase to take an L from it

rule that would give teams an alternative option to the onside kick.

So this would be the end of the onside kick?

Because every fricking team would take the 4th and 15 option.

Yes, probably by design

No

Refs would miss even more calls, and give shitty pass interference calls.

Nfl had a perfect product in the 90’s to late 2000’s.... I don’t understand why they keep trying to make these stupid changes.

Definitely a way that the NFL would rig games in the future.

I think I just found the new way the NFL will end the Saints season in the playoffs.

Are they?

I don’t think this idea is the best to replace it, but I can’t think of a time I was that excited by an onside kick when I know there’s barely a chance for conversion

Do not like this. You are giving the referees who are already terrible 99% of the game , one more chance at the end of the game to frick someone on pass interference etc.

According to football outsiders, 12.5% chance of converting. LINK

Chance recovering onside kick has fluctuated wildly over the years but has been around 15% on average.

The thing with onside kicks under today's rules is there is very little skill involved in actual success. Even if a kicker is great at placing his kicks, there is still very little chance of recovering the ball unless somebody on the receiving team makes a major mistake.

Onside kicks were exciting back in the days of crazy bounces off astroturf and when you could knock the shite out of somebody on the receiving team. Neither are coming back.

This proposal still sucks because of the power it will give refs.
