Can someone explain to me how Myles Garrett won this over TJ Watt?

Because the BLM loving NFL loved how he tried to kill a white person

The honest answer is PFF. They have been pushing hard the last few years that Myles Garrett had a higher player rating and more pressures.

I don't think those stats are correct.

From PFF:

quote:

The former No. 1 pick notched 14 sacks while setting a career high with 86 pressures and leading all defenders with a 93.6 grade.

Or, I assume, pressure are calculated differently. where is your data from?

I like using PFF grades to compare players but I don't think it should be used as a criteria for awards

The grades themselves no

But the hard metrics don't tell the full story

Nor do they adjust for the twice the rate of double teams

Yeah, if you're going to do a numbers comparison, you have to account for those double teams. Garrett was doubled at a higher rate than any edge rusher besides Parsons according to the number I've seen. And of course you have to just generally put numbers in context.

The numbers are impressive, though, as are Danielle Hunter's.

Hunter had more tackles and tackles for loss than both by a lot. I'm seeing some variance in the pressure numbers, but Hunter is up there.
It seems the pressure numbers for Garrett in OP are clearly off.

I think Garrett had the highest. But isn’t it easier to double team a DE as opposed to an edge guy?

Regardless Parsons had significantly more pressures (106) and the same amount of sacks. Watt had 5 more sacks and the SAME amount of pressures as Garrett. Watt also dropped back into coverage from time to time.

I know base numbers aren’t everything but Garrett didn’t do a whole lot the last half of the season. 3 sacks in 7 games isn’t what you would expect from a DPOY. Against teams like the Broncos he got completely shut down. I know he was hurt but that can’t excuse someone from winning an award

Imagine if the stats were reversed and TJ won the award. I’m sure ESPN would be ok with it.

You guys will find anything to cry about. Garrett had an incredible season, so did TJ. TJ has already won this award.

Did DEI not exist the past 2 years when white guys won?

It has to do with double teams and pressures, and also to do with being the best player on the best defense in the NFL.

They're both edges (primarily. Garrett lined up a bunch at DI this year, too).

Because Garrett played on a playoff team that had the best defense in the NFL while Watt played on a boring arse steelers team that no one really gave a shite about all year

Those double team numbers are absolute shite. They had Alex Highsmith being doubled more than TJ Watt.
