Ruston used to beat the crap out of West Monroe every year, even scheduled them for homecoming a few times.

West Monroe started cheating, including recruiting players and has been a power house ever since.

Around the state you have some traditional powers and some newly emerging powers. Evangel, West Monroe and Neville primarily run shite up north in the higher classifications (Byrd, Airline, Parkway, Ruston & Ouachita are also good). Haynesville is a legendary program in the smaller classifications.

I can't really think of a dominant program in central LA. In Lake Charles, you've got Sulphur and Barbe as the big dogs. Lafayette area has some great programs including Acadiana, Notre Dame and St. Thomas More. Carencro used to be a perennial power but haven't made much noise as of late.

Baton Rouge has private/select powers University Lab (@ LSU), Parkview Baptist and Catholic. Southern Lab was a big player in lower classes until scandal rocked the program late this summer. Public schools in the area haven't made much noise until recently with Zachary (north of BR) winning 2 of the last 3 5A titles. The 3 5A Ascension Parish schools hate each other and have a good round-robin of rivalry games annually...they just do nothing in the playoffs.

In the River Parishes, Destrehan and Hahnville are your 5A powers. East St. John has been formidable in the past but haven't been great as of late. Lower classification programs at Lutcher, St. James (public), St. Charles Catholic (private) and West St. John are almost always in the title hunt. There really are no good programs in the bayou area.

Redpop that was great! Exactly what I was looking for. Any information like that on other parts of the stage would also be appreciated if you wanted to break them down.

ETA: wow the schools in Louisiana are far less populous. In VA we have up to 6A for football. It’s normally only up to 3A for every other sport but they divide football even further. My high school had about 1700 kids and we were 5a. The 6A powers in Virginia had over 3000 kids.

If anybody is interested in giving me a rundown on LHSAA football it'd be appreciated.

Basically, in short, the LHSAA was founded in 1916. North Louisiana public schools quickly found a way to stretch the limits of the rules and won many early championships. South Louisiana, which is Catholic instead of Baptist, had some private Catholic schools that eventually started beating the North Louisiana schools, evening things out and leading to some public vs. private school tensions. Next, John Curtis Christian School and Evangel Christian Academy, two non-denomintional Christian schools, then tipped the scales in the private schools' favor and were essentially accused of setting up college-mill programs with alleged recruiting-like tactics, pseudo-athletic scholarships, etc. The public school majority recently basically retaliated and just voted a whole new set of playoffs for the private schools to compete in, so there are now 9 state champions instead of 5. Everyone gets a trophy, etc. [/thread]

LOL lists EDW and U-High.

Um, U-High has been to the playoffs more than any other Baton Rouge metro-area school, including Istrouma and their famed program. There aren't many other schools throughout the remainder of the state that have more playoff appearances than them either, for that matter.

Thank you. I'm not as conversant on the rest of the state, I know the names of the schools and what have you, but not the histories. Heck, I don't know a lot of details about this area, either. Which is why I didn't get specific, for the most part. Relying on failing memory.

I don't know that there are any schools that big in Louisiana. My buddy grew up in Tuscaloosa and went to a public school with an enrollment of 5,000 plus.

choupiquesushi and I don't see eye-to-eye on some issues, but he's more of an insider, I'm just a parent/fan. But he has forgot more than I'll ever know. Hopefully he will contribute. Chalmetteowl is a real fan and knows a good bit, then there's the whole West Monroe crew. GeauxColonels is another who knows a good bit.

I hope for your sake they add to the thread.

From what I could find out about the enrollment figures for the most recent reclassification exercise, Lafayette High was the largest public high school in Louisiana with just under 2,400 students.

To op:

Just keep Zachary in mind. We pretty much had one team to beat in the playoffs in 5A and that was WM. Catholic had the split instituted so they could finally win a few ships. NOLA teams are usually vastly overrated since the split. Can't recall the last time a team from NOLA area chose to come up to Zachary. North LA isn't scared to schedule.

That's all I got.

Is that a threshold issue for you?

It's called a joke. We like to make fun of Catholic because they had more NFL and MLB talent come through there than LSU in the 90s and 00s and couldn't win a ship in anything.

I mean we won baseball titles before the split.....

And we voted against the split both times......

Just fwiw Zachary has always been against the split. And the late 90s and early 00s were dark times in our athletic history. We didn't let that sway us to easier roads to the title.

Ok. Once again, you realize Catholic voted against the split correct?
