If the Nfl doesn’t want kickoffs anymore they should just determine the starting point with how a team scores. Maybe a touchdown at the 25, field goal at the 35

Give em time to figure it out. Some have already started. You'll begin to see a lot of soccer style kicks to curve the ball through the air making it difficult to catch on the fly. I'm anticipating some fumbling and recoveries by the kicking team later in the season when these athletes start mastering the kicks.

The scariest part of it is these dumb fricks didn’t have the foresight to see this was going to happen.

Make it the 40 and they will let people return it.

The 30 isn’t a big enough “penalty” for kicking it out.

I don’t like that it eliminates the onside kick.

Also, they should make a touch back be set at the 20 yard line. More teams would return if able because they wouldn’t want to start from their own 20 if they think they can get a little better starting position by returning the kickoff.

And if it’s a touchback…make ‘em earn a damn touchdown. These 42-28 point games are crazy. I miss the defenses of the 90s and 00s.

There’s still the onside kick. You just can’t do a surprise one, which has happened like 3 times over a few decades

I forgot they were doing that and I turned to a game last week and saw a kickoff and was like, man that is gay looking.

High schools still do kickoffs like men, so why can't the wusses in the NFL?

Probably a great point. Something like a kick 0-5 yards into the end zone ball goes to the 20, 5-10 yards it goes to the 30, and out the end zone goes to the 40. That way you encourage kickers to kick shorter and the returners to actually return. It lessens returns to penalize the receiving team purely for touchbacks because NFL kickers can kick it out the end zone essentially every time.

So everyone likes nothing but touch backs?

Or let me guess, "they shouldnt have changed it to begin with".

Yes, i agree, but they'll never go back to the old kickoffs. At least they're trying something different to keep it relevant, and can adjust as they go.

I don’t mind kickoff too much but forcing teams to declare an onside kick is straight garbage.
Yep. It negates probably the most surprise/crazy play of any superbowl

That being said, I wish the touchback was the 35 or 40 like the xfl. Then you would see way fewer touchbacks

Yeah! Next will be a “jump ball” at midfield after very score.

Get rid of touchbacks and fair catches on kickoffs. The end zone is still part of the field of play. Let the offense take over at the 40 if it goes out of the end zone though.

don't really see the reason for the outrage tho. It's a touch back 90% of the time just like it's been the last 3 years. Big whoop.

so then what was the point of the rule change? that’s the point

Don't have the actual stats. But the of the ones that have been returned I saw a lot of big ones last week. Including one for TD

In Week 1, there were 172 kickoffs -- 171 dynamic kickoffs and one unsuccessful onside kick (Commanders). Of the 171 dynamic kickoffs, 111 went for touchbacks (64.9%), with 57 returns (33.3%) and three landing out of bounds or short of the landing zone (1.8%), per NFL Research.

Last year they averaged 20% kickoff returns. So not much of a change

They will keep it and penalize teams more for fair catching it.

35 or 40 yard line,
