The stars are not likable and they are not relatable. Stars are constantly injured and sitting out games as well. The regular season is just honestly a dogshit product and unless you’re gambling, there’s nothing enticing about it.

I haven't watched the NBA regular season in years but this would be a start and reduce the regular season. I will actually watch some of the playoffs because the defensive energy is ramped up.

Everyone complaining about the lack of defense should check out this Cavs/Celtics game. Actual defense without any soft/bullshite fouls (so far.)

Two things they'd never do but would make regular season basketball way more interesting.

Fewer games and shorter games.

Expand the court to 100’x70’ and push the three pointer back ten feet. Shorten the regular season to 60 games and make it all about the playoffs.

I’m not complaining about the lack of defense exactly. Good defense can still be played within the current rules. I’m saying that the old defensive rules allowed for teams to be successful with different styles and made games more of a physical battle, which was more fun to watch night to night imo. The current rules have made it where you really only have one dominant strategy and every team does it.

Too many games….

Reduce it to 2 games a week starting Christmas Day and go to June.

I'm watching Pels at Mavs. Hope we get all of the Pels starters back before the season is over. They were really fun to watch last year, and in my opinion, their players were likable. I'm surprised they've won four games of the 14 they've played this season. They're like a G League team right now.

I used to be a Mavs fan but I've been watching the Pels since I moved back to Louisiana in 2011. Last years team won me over. I basically switched from the Mavs to the Pelicans during a game in Dallas last year. I just liked the Pels players more and thought they deserved my support.

I moved to Dallas in 1983 without a favorite team. I pulled for the Lakers in the 80's because my dad was a Celtics fan. I worked Mavs games in 1984, 1985 & 1986 for a company called Sports Network.. That's when they had a rotation of Mark Aguirre, Ro Blackman, Derek Harper, James Donaldson, Sam Perkins, Detlef Schrempf, and Roy Tarpley. They lost to the Showtime Lakers in the Western Conference Finals in the 1987 season. Got blown out in the 1st two games in LA, blew the Lakers out in the 1st two home games, lost on the road, won at home, and then lost game seven out there. If only Roy Tarpley could have controlled himself, and kept his nose clean.

When I started back working games full time for a new company, SportsTicker, the Three J's had just moved on and they had guys like Michael Finley, Dennis Scott, AC Green, Cedric Ceballos, Erick Strickland, and Don Nelson's two cornerstones: Shawn Bradley & Robert Pack. They wasted a 1st round pick on Australian Chris Anstey. That season's roster has 18 guys on it because of trades they made during the season. They made moves because they were terrible. I spent nearly every postgame in the visiting team's locker room. because I hardly ever had to even get quotes from the Mavs players.

Then they drafted Dirk and traded for Nash in 1998-99. Nash got over an injury that slowed him down his 1st two years in Dallas, and in 2000-01 they started a streak of 11 straight 50 win seasons. I worked games thru the 2006-07 season. Got to work the 2005-06 Finals.

I moved back to Louisiana in 2011. I was blessed to have Fox Sports Southwest and Bally's version of the same Mavs, Rangers & Stars coverage available in Ruston thru last season.

This season I've got the new Gulf Coast Sports & Entertainment Network, and I'm watching the Pels lose by 40 points to Dallas. OKC vs San Antonio is on TNT. I don't really enjoy watching Wembanyama., but I like watching SGA. I'm over there now. Surprised the Spurs are winning. Guess Holgren hasn't come back yet.

ETA:
My 65 year old self hasn't quit watching the NBA. I'll watch some LSU Men's & Women's Hoops, but really don't care about college basketball like I did when I was young. Growing up I liked college hoops better than the NBA. Ya'll let me know if there's a thread about what to do about college ratings.

I don't think they can fix it.

I don't watch the NBA anymore, haven't for over a decade. I used to love it.

I care about TEAMS when I watch a team sport, be it football, baseball, or basketball. The NBA went away from that a long time ago. Now they push stars; but those guys move around, and eventually they all retire.
But with the focus on star players, it doesn't even seem like a home crowd at times, it's more like a concert tour.

I also don't like the current style of play, I liked the older style where you focused on getting to the basket (and emphasized having big centers), instead of it being a 3 pt shooting fest.

I don’t watch the NBA because there really isn’t a team I love. I want the Pelicans to do well, but their best players are constantly hurt, so I don’t want to get emotionally attached. That, and there isn’t enough hours in the day.

Good basketball is dependent upon team play. Let’s be honest, it can be very hard for a player to climb through the ranks and become a recognizable player. If other players, coaches or the league decide he doesn’t fit then he will get weeded out by being excluded from team play. For myself, I am turned off by the overall personality of the league. I miss MJ who expected great team play and welcomed anyone who would participate in it.

The Caitlin Clark situation is more overt but clearly demonstrates what I mean. She will battle being excluded, ostensibly for being white, until it becomes a hill too steep to climb. Even black players who are disliked by other black players can be forced out of the game. When you have the players deciding who gets accepted and deciding when they themselves will play in games then it ruins the league.

The other important aspect is the three point shooting. When a team can stay in a game by making 33% of its shots against 50% then something has to change. The athleticism is removed from the game. If they want to control physical play then cut the roster size, call fouls correctly and make losing a player really hurt. If a team wants to keep a great athlete on the floor he will have to play clean in the more traditional game of getting in close for a high-percentage shot because having two shooters and three rebounders is boring. The long rebounds resulting from launched shots has ruined the art of getting rebounds thus removing a unique style of player from the game.

I love competitive basketball like we saw with MJ’s Bulls, Showtime, the Bad Boys, 80’s Celtics and Celtics with Garnett. Teams had to play fundamental basketball to avoid getting blown out. Standing around watching for a long rebound or hoping to launch a 24’ shot is not competitive or unique, you can watch that game at the local playground

The defensive rule changes we have seen in the last 25 years spurred offensive production

Not this recent wave of offense.

And the rules gave defense an even bigger advantage than what they lost.

Bring back hand checks and get rid of zone defense

This would give offenses even more advantages.

That's a shite trade for defense.

If the old illegal defense rules came back, offenses would spam this neo NBA offense even more

Those defenses were so limiting they would be incredibly easy to exploit with the modern NBA style.

That has nothing to do with the illegal defense and everything to do with marh

Players constantly hurt, sitting

This gets me, because I turn it on for a few minutes to see if it grabs me and I'm looking for the stars showing out. I get tired of teams raining three's and only making one out of every three attempts. I enjoy the game 12 ft. in and especially at the rim. I'm sort of a man without a team, and don't like the product enough to get theleague pass, so that doesn't help them gram me as a viewing customer either. I'm a football fan first and most of my NBA watching comes from April through June.
