Los Angeles Lakers star Russell Westbrook benched late in loss; coach Frank Vogel had green light, sources say

That’s the headline on ESPN’s website this morning. You are the head coach, but you have to get permission or a “green light” to bench someone.

Sign of the times. This all started at AAU level about 15 years ago and has gotten worse.

I don't even know why they call them coaches in the NBA. They should call them managers, because, basically, that is what they are.

In other words, LeGM said to sit him down.

Lebron set the tone for this team when he was checking the sat sheet while on the bench

This problem is completely at the feet of the owners. Hire a coach you have faith in and back your coach.

The problem is market value.

Talent is a lot more valuable than coaching in the NBA. Like, a LOT more valuable.

Other than nostalgic emotional thinking, why would coaches be given more value by the owner than star talent?

There isn’t another “team” sport where the individual is so diametrically important. The players know this, and it leads to their prima donna status, which sits poorly with the average joe who works his 40 - 60 hours a week.

Understandable thinking. But does pure talent always triumph in this league? It's still a team sport.

In some respects it can be like a chess match. While it is certainly preferable to have the most powerful pieces, ultimately the person manipulating the pieces and controlling the board makes the difference.

But that analogy is somewhat flawed because, in chess, the pieces are not sentient and cannot evaluate the ongoing game like the players can and some of the players actually seem to have a better understanding of their team than some coaches.

But in terms of investment you are certainly correct. Probably overall as well. And managing egos is also part of a good coaches repertoire,

It doesn't always triumph, but it triumphs the vast majority of the time.

A C level team with A level coaching loses against an A level team with C level coaching most of the time.

These guys would bench MJ for Sassing Phil Jackson . Trade him

They are really upset over player empowerment for some reason. I pay my hard earned money to see Magic Johnson ( who got Paul Westhead fired) & MJ . Not the coaches.

it started 30+yrs ago in AAU with the emphasis on gathering area talented kids together as young as possible

it got exponentially worse when the shoe companies got involved directly with teenagers and has spilled over into the HS and prep schools

The most talented team assuming health wins 9.5 / 10 nba series. There are rarely upsets that don’t involve some kind of serious injury to the favored team.

George Karl once said that NBA coaches had the equivalent impact and importance of a sixth man off the bench. It would be like Montrezl Harrell trying to tell LeBron and AD what to do last year. I'm sure there are times LeBron and AD would listen to him but most times, they won't.

I think that’s why Don Nelson didn’t acquire a lot of superstar talent. Dirk was an unknown when he drafted him and Steve Nash wasn’t a primadonna. The real “superstar” was Chris Webber and we know how that ended. He may have inherited some talent (like Ewing, Baron Davis). But Don Nelson didn’t GAF about superstar status and didn’t kiss a$$.
