Comparing the SEC in 1992 to now isn't a good comparison.
You mean a year where half of the conference finished in the Top 25 and went 5-1 in postseason play? Contrary to popular belief, the SEC didn't suddenly become an elite conference in 2006.

Texas A&M is considered a really good job. Gene Stallings was 27-45-1 there.
He was 70-16-1 at Alabama.
Mike Dubose even won the SEC at Alabama. Dennis Francione won 10 games on probation in year 2.
Shula won 10 games in 05.
We are #1

Texas They are in a league by themselves when it comes to the war chest of cash they have.

6. Bama. If you are arguably the greatest coach in history (Bear/Saban), you will win. For everyone else, this job is on the same level as the rest of the SEC top tier.
Thank you!!

I don't get the lack of love for Michigan by some. It is a top 5 gig.
U don't get a head coach, who was in super bowl in recent years to leave the team and pro ranks to take over, with out it being a top gig. Maybe a 70 year old coach, but not one still young like JH.

You only got JH because of poor ownership by the 49ers, coupled with the fact that he is a Michigan alum.

I don't think notre dame is top 10 anymore. Bad in-state talent and academic restrictions. Might be the best in title prestige, but that's a very very hard job.

I always see this team up there on the list but what have they done in the last 40 years to warrant such a lofty ranking?
We keep on talking program potential but that program has won a grand total of one national championship since 1975 and that title occurred a decade ago.

We can split hairs over rankings of the five. But I believe they are all very close.

Top three are easy IMO. Four and five are extremely debatable.
1) Texas
2) Florida/USC
In consideration:
tOSU
Alabama
UGA
LSU
FSU
OU
Michigan and Notre Dame are obviously top five historical programs but recruiting holds them out of the top five IMO - the same arguably goes for OU FWIW

ND's academics helps, not hurts.

Based on surrounding talent:
Miami
USC
Texas
Ohio state
Georgia
Based on lack of football commitment you have to drop Miami off the list. Add Alabama for both talent and history. So...
USC
Texas
Ohio state
Alabama
Georgia
Aside from notre dame schools that are in talent deficient states like Oregon, Nebraska, and Oklahoma shouldn't be anywhere near top 5.

One thing people don't seem to factor in is competition. I agree with another poster who questions whether any SEC program should be in the top 5.
I think Ohio St, Oklahoma, Texas, FSU and USC will typically have an easier path into the playoffs, plus all of the benefits we associate with top programs - money, facilities, access to recruits.
The margin for error is just too slim in the SEC. Everything else is there, but the bottom line is you got to go through 3-5 equally great programs to get to the finish line. From a probability standpoint that makes things a lot, lot harder.
Just look at recent history. Can any program offer more than Florida, LSU and Georgia? Yet UF fires a hot coaching commodity, UGA fires a guy who averages 10 wins and LSU comes within a whisper of firing miles. Auburn is on the verge of firing its second coach within three years of playing for a crystal ball. And Tennessee has been a giant mess for 10 years running.

Ohio State plays in the toughest division in the country.

I'm not sure if Alabama fans realize that if Saban was at about 10 other schools (Florida, Georgia, LSU, Texas, USC, Ohio State, FSU etc. etc.) they'd be winning at the same clip.
5 coaches have won national titles at Alabama.
5.
Alabama is also a top 5 state for producing NFL talent per capita. Also, no one, outside of ND, recruits nationally like Bama does right now. That footprint, and those connections between current/former players and their high schools, will not instantly disappear when Saban leaves.
I think while some Bama fans let their homerism blind them to the downsides of the program. You are doing the same when highlighting your perceived negatives.
I would rank the jobs, with facilities, AD, and recruiting base all taken into account as:
1) Texas-Strong lowering expectations makes this job more appealing.
2) Oklahoma- probably could flip flop with OSU.
3) Ohio St. We all know why.
4) Bama- pressure is insane, and unrealistic. Burnout is to be expected if coach needs even a modicum of positive recognition outside their own circle.
5) Florida- has best recruiting home field, despite instate competition, a+ facilities, very active and visible AD.
USCw would easily make the list, but there seems to be something behind the scenes the public doesn't have a clear view of keeping top coaches from even wanting to interview.

Notre Dame is not a top 5 job, and they should be replaced with Texas.
ND can recruit nationally via name recognition and brand, but they no longer monopolize national brand identity like they used to be able to do before televised games became the norm.
I'd argue there are just as many - if not more - bandwagon Alabama or Ohio State fans around the country nowadays than Notre Dame.
