Gene Stallings was by no means a "Saban type coach" and he averaged 10 wins a season, went to the SEC Championship Game four times in five tries, and won a national championship in 1992.

Right. With a good coach, Bama is about the same as the rest of the SEC top tier. From 1983-2006, the era between Bear and Saban, Bama won one national title and 3 SEC titles. their best coach in that 25 year period was Stallings, and here is his year by year wins, leaving out the 1-12 sanctions year in 1993: 7-11-13-12-8-10. That makes you the same as the other top SEC programs, but not Ohio St. That was their best 5-year stretch in that 25 year period.

I agree with another poster who questions whether any SEC program should be in the top 5.

Using CFB Data Warehouse's program rankings, the SEC has 6 programs in the top 15 in the past 75 years (the post-WWII period). Six. The Big Ten has three in the top 10 and five in the top 17, but Ohio St's dominance of the Big Ten has been more consistent than Bama's of the SEC. Also, OSU doesn't have to compete with another legit power for instate recruits.

BTW - according to the rankings, only one school has a tougher SOS over the past 75 years than LSU: Michigan (though Florida is a real close #3).
