Why does Liberty not get into the playoff?

The playoffs were designed for the P5 conferences. As far as I’m concerned the others don’t really have a seat at the table.

But FSU went undefeated in a P5 and did it with great defense and despite major injuries.

When everything else is subjective not sure why you can’t base it on record. FSU undefeated. Bama and Texas aren’t, but Texas BEAT Bama.

Anything beyond that is just muddying the waters.

I absolutely agree with this. Was stupid to have 4 spots for 5 conferences. Surprised something like this year wasn’t more frequent

Miracle on Ice

100% no. USA wasn't given much of the chance prior to group play. They then tied eventual bronze winner Sweden and smoked heavy silver favorite Czechoslovakia. They then soundly beat the rest of the teams in their group. No eyeball test on the planet could keep them out of the medal round with their performance. Your eyeball test snubbing would have had to happen before group play.

Pistons 2004 championship

Some ugly basketball there in the playoffs, especially the ECF vs the Pacers. Games in the 60s and 70s.

I don’t know what the fairest way is but coming out and saying it was because a kid broke his leg and the whole team wasn’t the same doesn’t seem fair to me. Say it was schedule strength

Their entire criteria is listed on their website. Not hard to find. Just because they cited injury doesn't mean they ignored all other considerations.

Where is this written? Pretty sure any team in the FBS can qualify.

They do consider record as well as strength of schedule, winning your conference, and health of team. There's nothing subjective about any of that.

If all of the FBS is allowed in and you're not sure why you can't base it on record, then you put Liberty in.

Ah yes! I’m a hockey fan and have been one for years. You are just dead wrong. Even in the movie Miracle, the coach said if they played the Soviets 10 times, the Soviets would probably win 9. The Soviets had beat them real bad just a few days earlier.

“ The Soviet team had captured the previous four Olympic hockey golds, going back to 1964, and had not lost an Olympic hockey game since 1968. Three days before the Lake Placid Games began, the Soviets routed the U.S. team 10-3 in an exhibition game at Madison Square Garden in New York City.”

David and Goliath. The Philistines thought they had this thing in the bag. IOW, the LSU/Tennessee SECCG in 2001. Honorable mention is the 1966 Cotton Bowl where the 7-3 LSU Tigers defeated the 10-0 Arkansas Razorbacks 14-7, possibly denying the Piggys a National Championship.

Thank for the history lesson, but I'm well aware of the exhibition loss to the Soviets. If you're going to go with the "in a vacuum" argument and look at it as just the match up, then maybe they call the game a Soviet win. Didn't happen in a vacuum though. The argument here is an eyeball test prevents the Miracle on Ice. There is zero chance an eyeball test keeps the USA out of the medal round in favor of the runner up, Czechoslovakia. They would have had to call the match up right then and there in the medal round or your eyeball test would have needed to exclude them from the Olympics entirely.

everybody in the media said it should have been USC and OU before that game happened.

This is completely incorrect. The debate was OU or USC, it was never about LSU not deserving to be in the National Title game it was always between USC and OU. shite it was even brought up in the post game press conference to Saban that it was never a question about LSU being in the Title game.

Alabama pulling out a luck arse win against Auburn at 4th and 31. Florida State's win against Louisville was harder than Alabama playing an Auburn team that LSU blew out 48-14. Florida State got screwed.

And Alabama beat a UGA team that FSU most likely loses to. Texas demolished a team that was every bit as good as Louisville. Bama and Texas have rational and reasonable arguments for getting in.

Project: “Battle of Thermopylae”

Except the Greeks (Spartans, Thespians, et al), that were left to defend the pass, lost despite their valor. However, Themistocles led the overmatched Greek Navy to victory over Xerxes I’s Persian fleet at the Battle of Salamis during the same Persian invasion.
