NAACP urging athletes, fans to boycott colleges in the south over voting rights

The NAACP is calling on Black athletes and fans to boycott the athletic programs of public universities in states that are taking steps that the nation's oldest civil rights group says are restricting Black voting rights.
Launched Tuesday, the "Out of Bounds" campaign urges prospective Black athletes, their families, alumni and fans to "withhold athletic and financial support" from major public universities in states that "have moved to limit, weaken or erase Black voting representation."
If Black athletes participate in the boycott, it could deplete rosters for powerhouse football and basketball programs across the Southeastern Conference and Atlantic Coast Conference.
The NAACP is among groups responding to a wave of gerrymandering in the aftermath of a Supreme Court ruling that winnowed a key provision of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
quote:
The NAACP's campaign calls out Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas and South Carolina as states to boycott, arguing that the athletic programs of those states' flagship universities are especially reliant on Black athletic talent and should protect Black political interests.
"Black athletes should not be asked to generate wealth, prestige, and power for state institutions while those same states strip political power from Black communities," Johnson said.

I did not realize having you very own district for your very own skin color was a civil right.

It is amazing watching all this advocation for segregation. Truly amazing.

Ridiculous and pandering. These student athletes are getting life-changing generational wealth through largely white donors. This will change the minds of less than 1% of people.
I am installing a security system in my home at this very second. Guy is from DC and he just said it's stupid. He says life in Saucier, MS where he just bought a home is 100 times better, safer, more affordable and better neighbors. People don't care about this ruling. This is the NAACP trying to remain relevant.

Only way the black athletes will go north is to pay them more than in the south. They don’t care about what the NAACP thinks and wants.

Their voting rights remain unchanged

That's really going to hurt Grambling, Southern, Jackson St...

but could be interesting if the billionaire donors in Chicago, LA and New York up their NIL to attract athletes.
. Big 10 alumni have much more bigger than the SEC alumni

They want to play without having to worry about politics. Athletes know that if they have a better skill set, color does not matter.
But I will say, Boise players being able to wear blue uniforms on their blue field with the blue walls is a definite advantage for Boise.

All the while almost half the voting populace in each northeast state votes republican and has ZERO representation in DC because of this same mechanism, has nothing to do with "voting rights" has everything to do with political gerrymandering which, last time i checked, is perfectly constitutional

Very disingenuous thing to say about that part of the country. In the state of CT for example, their congressional map has been mostly the same for multiple decades now and one of those districts has since flipped blue and has been staying that way. They legit hate MAGA up there when it comes to the congressional delegation.

Did they complain about Massachussettes gerrymandering republicans out of office?

You're making my point here, it's always been about political dominance not "voting rights" last I checked the right to vote still exists

Big 10 is already on a roll without this.

There's a very slight chance they could hurt the recruiting class of 2027, but not very likely. Sure maybe a handful of recruits could be turned off by this happening, but if a student was leaning toward Ohio State or Penn State anyways the gerrymandering is not going to be the deciding factor. I have never heard of an athlete stating politics is why he is not choosing a school.

The racist, gerrymandered exclusively black districts really only exist in the south so good luck finding somewhere else to go.
